The Towler Times
January 8th, 2016
I hope everyone had a warm and wonderful winter break. I am so happy to have the students back in class!!
Our Week of Learning...
- in math, we began learning the difference between grams and kilograms. The students have learned that a paper clip weighs about 1 gram and a textbook weighs about 1 kilogram. The students have also learned that "kilo" means 1000 and know 1000 grams = 1 kilogram. We will take a quiz on grams/kilograms next week.
- We began our next unit of study...Native Americans! This week we read about 2 tribes, the Kwakiutl and the Anasazi. We also enjoyed our read aloud Brother Eagle, Sister Sky. Next week we will begin another novel study, Stone Fox.
- In writing, the students will research a Native American tribe, of their choosing, and write an informative essay.
Today, the students went to the library and looked at many books about Native Americans. They then created a list of tribes they would be interested in researching. We narrowed, down their lists and each student now has a tribe to research. We will begin our research next week in the library. We will turn our research into informative essays for display at Open House. Along with this unit of study, the students will be asked to create a project to share what they learned which will also be on display during Open House. This project will be done at home. Please keep and eye out for this information, next week via your child's take home folder. As always, thank you for your continued support at home.
What happened to the Anasazi Tribe?
Below you will see some 3rd graders leading their own discussion session. Their topic was, what happened to the Anasazi Tribe? The students did a wonderful job leading their discussion, adding their own thoughts, and being respectful listeners! Ask your learner what they think happened to the Anasazi Tribe. Why do they think they disappeared so suddenly?
Today the students buddy read a Native American Pacific Northwest Trickster Tale entitled Raven. Ask your child who was the trickster and what was the trick!
A look ahead...
