March is Music in Our Schools Month
For more than 30 years, March has been officially designated by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) for the observance of Music In Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®), the time of year when music education becomes the focus of schools across the nation.
The purpose of MIOSM is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that school is where all children should have access to music. MIOSM is an opportunity for music teachers to bring their music programs to the attention of the school and the community, and to display the benefits that school music brings to students of all ages.
At Avoca, we are planning fun ways to celebrate. We will have a music game every day. We are starting with the “Where’s The Music Stand” game. A decorated music stand is displayed every day somewhere in the school. When students see it, they fill out a paper and put it in the bucket. One name is drawn every day and that student wins a prize. Next, we will play Name That Tune. A short excerpt from a song will be played on the morning announcements. Students can guess the song and possible win a prize for the correct answer.
5th through 12th grade chorus and band students have started “The Pin Game”. Each student that would like to play is given a music pin. They have to make it through the entire month of March and not get caught by Mrs. Gardner or Mr. Zielinski without wearing the pin. It is a fun game that has been played for almost as long as Mrs. Gardner has been teaching.
Some Avoca students will also be participating in All County Music Festivals. The first one is March 3rd and 4th at Hornell School. The second one is March 17th and 18th at Haverling in Bath.

These groups of 1st-3rd graders really work well together and help each other along the way.
We do have some painting projects coming up so please be sure to send them with clothes for creating that may get stained or messy in the process.
The Creative Kids group is limited to 8 kids in grades 1-3. Please be sure to sign them up quickly if they would like to join us.
