Personal Reflections...
I learned about number talks last year and have been modeling them for teachers a little over a year now in classrooms from K-5. I did a number talk this week in a grade 3 classroom using the expression 52-39. One student said that he likes to use addition to solve subtraction so he changed it in his mind to 39 plus something is 52. Then, he added one to make 40, ten to make 50 and then 2 more to the 52. Then he added the 1+10+2 and got 13. The next student said she changed the 39 to 40 in her head and took that away from 52 to get to 12 and then added one back since she had taken one too many away to get to her 13. Another student added one to both numbers to change it to 53-40 to make it easier for her brain and got the 13. I was so thrilled that these students were able to describe such awesome strategic thinking. I know that because they are thinking this way in 3rd grade they have a solid foundation for future math success!!
