A Letter from Superintendent Jones
Dear Families and Staff,
As we enter the third month of the school year, we extend our warmest greetings, hoping this newsletter finds you in good health and high spirits. Time is passing swiftly, and as we settle into our educational routines, our commitment to our overarching theme, "RE-ENERGIZING THE PRIDE, RENOVATING THE PLANS, and REBUILDING THE POSSIBILITIES," remains unwavering.
It is important for me to address the concerns from a recent altercation at Southwestern Classical Academy. As you may know, a teacher was injured in that altercation; however, she is now back in the classroom, focused on inspiring, motivating, and educating each of her students. The two students involved will be held accountable by the school district and the prosecutor of Genesee County. We value all staff and every student we serve in Flint Community Schools. We will not tolerate physical violence on any level.
Here is what I need you all to know⦠I believe in Flint Community Schools more now than ever before. I believe we have staff here to impact the lives of every scholar we are graced to serve. I believe each of our scholars deserves to be encouraged to dream, learn, and achieve at any level they desire. I believe in speaking a scholar mentality into our students. Yes, some may not believe in calling our students scholars; they must earn that title. Regardless of how some may feel, I will NOT stop speaking it into the atmosphere and their lives. My father called me a leader far before I ever became one. My mom told me I was a champion far before I won any trophies. Their encouragement helped me to believe in myself before I could see it or make it my reality. I will remain faithful to this tremendous opportunity to impact the lives of Flint kids, even if I'm doing it all alone! I know I am not alone in this effort.
I need the stakeholders of Flint Community Schools to stay focused on the great things happening in FCS and continue to believe! We only want believers on this train! Our scholars deserve it!
We have exciting news to share that underscores the dedication and excellence within our Flint Community Schools. All eleven (11) Flint Community Schools have achieved a remarkable milestone, earning distinguished MiMTSS awards with Bronze and Silver levels of recognition for their ongoing commitment to implementing a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) for our scholars! Join us in extending heartfelt congratulations to these schools for this remarkable achievement. This accomplishment is a testament to our educators and staff's hard work and dedication, who continuously strive to provide the best support and resources for our scholars' growth and development.
We are thrilled to share some remarkable news that will undoubtedly enhance the educational experience for our scholars. Thanks to a generous grant from the Michigan Department of Education, we are excited to introduce the "Flint Community Schools Family Literacy Practices" program. This initiative represents a significant leap forward in our commitment to fostering a love for reading and expanding the literary horizons of our young learners. As part of this program, we will provide diverse classroom libraries to all eighty-six (86) K-6 grade classrooms across our district.
What does this mean for our scholars? It means they will have access to a rich and varied collection of books tailored to their age and reading levels in their classrooms. These classroom libraries will support their academic growth and ignite their imagination and curiosity. From captivating stories to informative texts, our scholars will have a world of knowledge and adventure at their fingertips.
While we celebrate this literacy initiative, we also wish to underscore the importance of "Student Count Day" for Flint Community Schools. This annual event is pivotal in our district, as it officially tallies the number of scholars in our schools. The outcome directly impacts our funding and resources for the rest of the academic year. We kindly urge all parents and guardians to ensure their scholars are present and ready to engage in a day of learning on this significant occasion.
In addition, we are thrilled to announce the launch of "Fridays with the Supe." I'm excited to visit schools on select Fridays connecting with scholars and staff. This initiative aims to deepen our understanding of the daily experiences within our educational environment. By fostering these connections, we strengthen the bond between our leadership and the entire school community, united in our pursuit of academic excellence.
We wholeheartedly thank you for your unwavering commitment to our school community. Your engagement, support, and enthusiasm are the driving forces behind our vibrant and thriving place of learning. Let's continue working together, celebrating achievements, nurturing growth, and creating a positive and inclusive environment for all.
Educationally yours,
Kevelin B. Jones II

Fostering Student Voices for Positive Change
Education is not just about imparting knowledge; it's also about creating an environment where scholars and staff feel heard, valued, and empowered to shape their educational experience. In a commendable effort to bridge the gap between school leadership and the student body, Superintendent Jones has initiated a program called "Fridays with Superintendent Jones," which promises to bring about positive changes in the school community.
Superintendent Jones has embarked on a mission to visit each school building multiple times throughout the school year. These visits are not mere formalities but opportunities for the superintendent to genuinely interact and connect with scholars and staff. The aim is to create a platform where scholars can express their thoughts, concerns, and aspirations for their school. The plan includes visiting two classrooms of the principal's choice during each visit, ensuring a diverse range of perspectives and experiences are heard.
One recent meeting in particular, where Superintendent Jones met with the Student Council, showcased the power of this initiative. Tracey D. Cavette- Palmer, MA, BBA, AAS, PDS-EM at
Flint Southwestern Classical Academy shared her thoughts on the meeting: "AMAZING! I just had the opportunity to sit in one of the most inspiring meetings with the superintendent. Our students spoke up and gave great insight into our school culture and the changes they want made within our school."
Scholars voiced many ideas and suggestions during the meeting to improve their school environment. These ideas ranged from creating a rock garden and a park to enhancing the school's track and sprucing up the overall appearance of the building. They also desired more engaging assemblies like Lion Heart, additional outdoor flowers, appealing wall posters, roof repairs, and a wider variety of lunch offerings with extended lunch periods. Moreover, they advocated for more enjoyable and interactive lessons.
What's truly remarkable about this meeting was Superintendent Jones' response. He reminded the Student Council members that they were in office to make constructive changes and encouraged them to speak about problems and the positive aspects of the school's culture and climate. He assured them he would be their advocate, following up with the council president and promising to return for further discussions.
This meeting allowed the students to share their ideas and have a voice in shaping the direction of their school. The atmosphere in the room was filled with optimism and positivity, showcasing the incredible potential of this collaborative approach between school leadership and students.
Superintendent Jones' commitment to this program is a testament to his dedication to improving the educational experience for all students. It demonstrates that education is a shared endeavor where scholars' voices should be valued and incorporated into decision-making processes.
As we continue to witness the positive impact of "Fridays with Superintendent Jones," we look forward to more productive meetings, innovative ideas, and a school environment where every scholar feels valued, heard, and empowered to contribute to improving their educational journey. This initiative is a shining example of how collaboration between students and school leadership can lead to positive and meaningful change within the academic community.

Exploring Excellence in Education
Celebrating Excellence and Innovation in Flint's Schools
In the heart of Flint, Michigan, a robust educational initiative is underway to redefine how education is experienced and celebrated. Known as "Fridays with the Supe," Superintendent Jones's unique program highlights the remarkable work happening in Flint's schools. Each Friday, Superintendent Jones embarks on a journey of exploration, visiting different schools and classrooms to gain a deeper understanding of the district's needs, strengths, and innovations.
This particular Friday was no exception. Superintendent Jones's visits took him to several schools across the district, including Freeman Elementary, Holmes STEM Middle School, Doyle Ryder, and Durant Tuuri Mott. The day was filled with inspiration, innovation, and a shared commitment to providing the best possible education for Flint's scholars.
Empowering Students at Freeman Elementary
Superintendent Jones began September's journey at Freeman Elementary, welcoming him into Mrs. Gatz's 6th-grade classroom. The students' enthusiasm was infectious, and they eagerly shared their projects, presentations, and thoughts on their educational journey. Mrs. Gatz's teaching methods fostered a love of learning and encouraged students to express themselves confidently. The visit left Superintendent Jones inspired and filled with hope for the future of Flint's young scholars.
Meeting the Needs of Scholars at Holmes STEM Middle School.
Holmes STEM Middle School was the next stop on Superintendent Jones's journey, where he had the opportunity to interact with Mrs. Bearut in her math classroom. Mrs. Bearut recognized a need for a math teacher and petitioned the district to change her focus to better serve the scholars. Her dedication to meeting the evolving needs of her students exemplifies the commitment of educators throughout the district to provide a high-quality education tailored to the unique needs of each scholar.
Additionally, Superintendent Jones explored Technology classes with Mrs. Green, who has been instrumental in securing grants and funds to ensure scholars have the resources to excel in today's ever-evolving technological landscape. Her efforts underscore the district's commitment to equipping students with the skills and resources necessary for success in an increasingly digital world.
Transformed Environments at Doyle Ryder
Superintendent Jones also took him to Doyle Ryder, a school that recently underwent significant renovations to create a more conducive learning environment. Visiting classrooms with Mrs. Mallette and Mrs. Nassar, Superintendent Jones witnessed the positive impact of these changes on the scholars. The newly remodeled environments have breathed new life into the learning spaces, providing students a fresh and inspiring place to learn and grow.
The Power of Music Education at Durant Tuuri Mott
The last highlight of this educational exploration journey through the district led Superintendent Jones to Durant Tuuri Mott School, where he visited Mrs. Stebbins's class and had an awesome visit with some very enthusiastic scholars eager to share their day. He experienced the exceptional work being done by Frank Pitts in the music class. The highlight of the visit was the piano lab, funded by Title IV funds, a critical resource for music education. Title IV funds have also supported the acquisition of other instruments and resources, emphasizing the district's commitment to a well-rounded education that nurtures scholars' artistic talents.
Embracing the "Four Be's"
During his visits, Superintendent Jones challenged each class to recite and explain the "Four Be's": Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful, and Be Mindful. These core values guide behavior and foster a positive school culture that promotes safety, responsibility, respect, and mindfulness among scholars and staff.
"Fridays with the Supe" is not just a series of school visits; it's a celebration of the dedication, innovation, and excellence in Flint's educational institutions. Superintendent Jones's initiative provides hope and inspiration when education faces unique challenges and opportunities. It highlights the belief that education is a collective effort where students and educators work together to shape the future.
As Superintendent Jones continues his journey through the schools of Flint, we can anticipate more stories of innovation, dedication, and excellence. "Fridays with the Supe" is a testament to the transformative power of education and the commitment to nurturing young minds. The district is building a brighter future for its scholars and the community.

Empowering Our Scholars: DISTRICT-WIDE NEW CURRICULUM
We are thrilled to share some exciting news representing a significant step forward in our commitment to providing a world-class education for all our scholars. Thanks to the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds, Flint Community Schools has embarked on a remarkable journey of curriculum transformation.
In this article, we would like to highlight this endeavor's importance, impact on our scholars, and the commitment to excellence at the core of everything we do.
Curriculum Overhaul
Over the past year, we have diligently worked on a comprehensive curriculum overhaul. This transformation encompasses all core subjects: English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies, as well as a variety of electives such as Spanish, Drama, Visual Arts, High School Health, and AP Language. This change is especially significant because, depending on the subject area, the last curriculum adoption ranged from seven to fifteen years ago.
The Power of ESSER Funds
The driving force behind this transformative initiative is the availability of ESSER funds. These funds have allowed us to acquire brand-new curriculum resources for our entire district. This is an update and a profound shift in delivering education to our scholars.
Connecting with Current Events
One key advantage of having a new curriculum is the ability to connect our scholars with current events. In a rapidly changing world, our education must remain relevant and reflective of the times. The new curriculum empowers our educators to integrate the latest information and trends into their teaching, ensuring our scholars are well-prepared to navigate the complexities of today's world.
Technology Integration for Enhanced Learning
Meaningful integration of technology is another crucial aspect of our curriculum adoption. In today's digital age, technology is an invaluable tool for teaching and learning. It provides our scholars with an additional pathway to explore and understand the world, offering opportunities for interactive, multimedia-rich educational experiences that enhance engagement and comprehension.
What Does This Mean for Our Scholars?
The impact of this curriculum transformation on our scholars is immense. All of the adopted programs prioritize a culturally responsive and inclusive learning experience. Print and digital resources include stories from diverse and traditionally underrepresented groups, ensuring that every scholar can see themselves reflected in their learning materials. This inclusivity fosters an environment where all scholars feel valued and heard.
Furthermore, our new curriculum places a strong emphasis on inquiry-based learning. This approach invites students to identify questions and use critical thinking to solve problems. It enhances academic skills and nurtures a mindset of curiosity and exploration that will serve our scholars well throughout their lives.
Our dedicated educators play a pivotal role in this transformation by supporting scholars in developing social and emotional competencies. They create a safe and supportive environment that fosters emotional intelligence, resilience, and interpersonal skills. Simultaneously, our teachers hold high expectations for all scholars, believing in their potential and guiding them toward academic excellence.
Flint Community Schools' adoption of the new curriculum, made possible by ESSER funds, marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to providing a top-notch education. It represents a forward-thinking approach to education that ensures our scholars are prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
Cultivating Inclusivity & Literacy Through Diverse Classroom Libraries
Flint, Michigan - In a groundbreaking literacy initiative, Flint Community Schools has taken a giant leap toward building a more inclusive and engaging educational environment. Thanks to a generous grant from the Michigan Department of Education, the Family Literacy Practices program now provides a diverse library in all 86 K-6 grade classrooms, transforming how students connect with literature and the world.
Motivation and Engagement: Keys to Academic Success
Research has consistently shown that motivated and engaged learners are more likely to excel academically and achieve positive outcomes. Recognizing this, FCS has taken proactive steps to create an environment where literacy activities are not just a part of the curriculum but a source of inspiration for young minds.
Diverse Classroom Libraries: A Window to the World
One of the program's cornerstones is the introduction of diverse classroom libraries. These libraries are carefully curated to offer students a richer, more inclusive reading experience. Scholars gain a deeper understanding of the world by immersing themselves in stories featuring diverse characters, viewpoints, and authors.
Reading as a Gateway to Understanding
Beyond the pages of a book, reading becomes a powerful tool for students to connect with themselves and others. It serves to make connections, solve real-world problems, cultivate empathy, embrace the value of making mistakes, find joy in storytelling, and, perhaps most importantly, cherish the diversity of people and cultures that shape our society.
The Role of Children's Literature
Children's literature plays a pivotal role in the literacy development of young minds. Recognizing this, FCS places a special emphasis on the teaching and use of children's literature. Educators are provided with a rich array of books spanning multiple genres, all designed to reflect our vibrant and diverse world.
A More Inclusive Tomorrow
Flint Community Schools believes a well-rounded education equips scholars with academic skills and nurtures compassionate, empathetic, and culturally aware individuals. Through this initiative, the schools are sowing the seeds for a more inclusive tomorrow, where young learners embrace the richness of diversity through the pages of a book.
Flint Community Schools' literacy initiative, made possible through the support of the Michigan Department of Education, is a testament to our commitment to fostering a love for reading and an appreciation for diversity. By offering scholars the opportunity to explore the world through diverse books, they are nurturing the leaders and empathetic citizens of tomorrow who will shape a brighter, more inclusive future for all.

Seasonal Illness Protocols for FCS
As this time of year approaches, it becomes increasingly common for us to encounter a rise in cases of communicable diseasesβthose infections that can quickly spread from person to person. These infections encompass a range of illnesses, including but not limited to COVID-19, the flu, RSV, and the enterovirus, commonly known as the stomach virus.
When our community experiences an uptick in such cases, it becomes paramount to recall the measures we can take to curb or halt their transmission. These preventive steps include:
- practicing good hand hygiene
- staying home when feeling unwell
- wearing a mask if displaying symptoms
- covering coughs and sneezes appropriately
New Safety Protocol
The Board of Education welcomes and encourages visits to schools by parents, other adult residents of the community, and interested educators. To that point, It is necessary to establish visitor guidelines that support educational programming to continue undisturbed when visitors are present, and to prevent the intrusion of disruptive persons into the schools. All visitors are required to sign in, pass through metal detectors, and present photo identification that will be scanned prior to entering all Flint Community Schools' buildings. Visitors who refuse to provide identification forfeit their entry into Flint Community Schools' buildings.

PUBLIC NOTICE: ASBESTOS ABATEMENT AT DOYLE-RYDER
We want to inform you about upcoming asbestos abatement work at Doyle Ryder Elementary during the next Intersession from Oct. 21 through Oct. 28. 2023. The purpose of this notification is to ensure transparency and safety for all our scholars, staff, and visitors.
Scope of Work:
We will be removing approximately 200 linear feet of Asbestos-Containing Material (ACM) pipe insulation in the attic of the 3rd floor on the south wing of the building.
Safety Measures:
- Negative Pressure Containment: The work area will be under a negative pressure containment system. This system ensures that no asbestos particles escape the rest of the building, eliminating any risk of exposure to building occupants.
- Restricted Access: The area near the entrance to the attic adjacent to the third-floor elevator will be closed off to all building occupants. Access will be strictly prohibited during the abatement work.
- Stairwell Closure: The stairwell on the North side near the main entry to the building will also be closed during the project work to prevent contamination. This closure will be temporary and lifted upon project completion.
- Safety Testing: After the abatement work is completed, the space will undergo rigorous testing to ensure that it is safe for all occupants to return to school after the Intersession. We will reopen the affected area once it is deemed safe by certified experts.
