**OPTIMIST YOUTH OF THE MONTH
Each month, the Huntingburg Optimist Club recognizes an outstanding senior who is academically strong and service oriented. The recipient for January was Carson Mundy, son of Jeff and Jeanine Mundy. February’s recipient was Garrett Altmeyer, son of Jeff and Annette Altmeyer and March’s recipient was Tucker Schank, son of Dave and Alisa Schank.
**CLASS OF 2020
Juniors still have time to take a college day. College days must be taken prior to May 1st. Juniors need to contact the college of their choice and arrange a day for the visit. Paperwork must be completed and turned in to student services two days before the visit. After the visit, a letter from the college verifying the visit must be turned in to student services the day the student returns to school from the visit.
Juniors planning on attending a four year college should register to take the SAT or ACT by the end of their junior year. The website for SAT is collegeboard.org The website for the ACT is act.org If you have any questions or need help with registration, please see Mrs. Fowler.
**Mrs. Fowler and Mrs. Pulley have been meeting with students to help them select classes for the 2019-2020 school year. Parents who have questions are welcome to contact the Guidance Office.
**College-Bound Seniors: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is due April 15th. The FAFSA determines what types of financial assistance are available to families to help them pay for college. Even if you don't think your family will qualify for assistance, you must still complete the FAFSA. Colleges and universities will not award scholarships to students who have not completed this application.
**The local scholarship handout is posted on the Class of 2019 Guidance Information Google Classroom. There are still several scholarships that have April and May deadlines. Talk to your student about local scholarships if he or she plans to attend college in the fall. All seniors should have access to this handout.
PBIS
The PBIS team continues to open the Raider Depot on Fridays during lunch. Students can use the Raider bucks earned to buy certificates for local establishment, drinks, t-shirts, sweatshirts, and coupons.
Thanks to Mrs. Katy Beck, the PBIS team has completed and shown the P (persistence) and the R (resourcefulness) videos. Filming for the I (integrity) video will take place in early March and will be released in early April. All that will be left is the D (dependability) and E (empathy). Stay tuned
Mayor's Youth Council
The Mayor's Youth Council is a group that works towards bettering Huntingburg. In partnership with the City of Huntingburg and Mayor Denny Spinner, the group is currently in the planning stages of building new basketball courts on the north side of town.
In September, the group applied for a $5,000 grant from the state and through the help of the My Community, My Vision program the grant was obtained. Members of this group are hard at work writing drafts and working with experts on how to make the project a success.
Recently, 6 members attended the Statewide Youth Leadership Summit at IU Bloomington. While there, they learned about other community development projects from other youth around the state. State and local policy leaders were also there to encourage all the youth to invest in their communities and in Indiana.
Next month the group will present their community development project before the AIM (Accelerate Indiana Municipalities) council.
If you are interested in joining the Mayor's Youth Council applications will be available in the front office right after spring break! If you have any questions please contact Paige Kendall!

Tutoring -several opportunities
2. New Partnership with Indiana University A new opportunity for student support made possible by a partnership between SHS, Indiana University, and the Serve Indiana grant. Starting immediately, students have access to online tutoring by Indiana University students at campuses throughout the state. Students will be required to register with the IU system, which will allow them to create a ZOOM account (the delivery platform for tutoring.) IU students will staff the tutoring service on Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights from 6-9:30. An additional feature will be bilingual tutoring services, which are available on those nights from 7-9:30pm. More details can be found on the attached flyer. The focus of the online tutoring support will be the core areas of Math, Science, English, and Social Studies. 3. In addition to the online supports that are currently available, we are in the process of creating a face-to-face tutoring program that will offer supports before and after school here at SHS, as well as a couple of evening opportunities at the Huntingburg Public Library. It is anticipated that this program will start in early February. More details to come.
