May Newsletter
Message From Mrs. T
May
Happy May everyone!
It is very hard to believe that it is almost the end of the school year already. At Winona, our entire staff commits to finishing the year strong and holding students to high expectations while celebrating all of the success that we are seeing. Students have done a wonderful job setting goals for themselves as we participate in our end-of-year testing. At the end of the month, please be on the lookout for some of our end-of-year data regarding student achievement, growth, and attendance. We have some fun events this month that we hope that you choose to participate in including our school carnival (game theme) and our field day, 5th Grade continuation. Please read the remainder of our newsletter for dates and times!
I cannot say thank you enough for sharing your children with us each day. Each year we enjoy continuing our relationships with our returning students and look forward to getting to know our new families. When we show up to work each day, we devote our time, energy, and love to supporting Every Kid, Every Day. Thank you for partnering with us to ensure that your students maximize their time that they are with us and for being a part of our Winona family.

Heads up!
It’s that time of year for parents to be on the alert for head lice. Head lice are a common childhood affliction. All places where children get together are places where head lice can be transferred. Clean hair and home are no guarantee that head lice will not find your child.
From time to time as a precaution, school staff may check for head lice in classrooms on an as-needed basis just to be certain that there is no notable incidence of lice. If any concerns arise, the family of affected students will be notified. PLEASE remember that although lice can be a communicable condition, having this condition poses no real threat to health. Schools are not often the place where head lice are spread. Sleepovers among friends and relatives are thought to be a common way they are passed from home to home.
Please feel free to contact the Health Office (970-613-7102) should your child present with itching of the scalp but you are uncertain if nits are seen in the hair. We can help you gain clarity and to guide you in treatment options should the presence of nits be confirmed.
Annual Family Check-In OPEN
Via Parent Portal
(must be completed every year)
The Annual Family Check-In (AFC) Link is available on the Parent Portal from March through September. A parent/guardian in the student’s primary household must review and sign the permission forms for the upcoming school year. The parent/guardian must also review (and update as needed) the student’s household information, emergency contacts, and health information. The AFC will show the Attendance Boundary school, IF you have received and accepted a Choice Enrollment seat, please complete the AFC and the registrars will update the enrollment.

Reading Fact for the month!
“According to the School Library Journal, kids who participate in a summer reading program not only mitigate summer learning loss, but they actually significantly improve their reading skills.” 3 Ways to Get Kids Reading Over the Summer
Did you know that the Loveland Public Library offers a summer reading program for kids AND adults? The best part is it is FREE to get a library card. Reading with your child will slow down the summer slide and they will be more prepared to start the school year! A great reason to enjoy reading this summer with your family Click the link to find out more about the library and what they have to offer.

How to Encourage Punctuality
Studies have shown that using praise as a positive reinforcement is an effective strategy for student attendance. However, family participation is also key to good attendance for younger students. Some of the Athlos tips for good attendance include:
Establishing and keeping a schedule; children thrive on routine
Going to bed and waking up earlier
Preparing for the morning the night before by laying out outfits, packing backpacks, and pre-packing lunches
If work schedules conflict, investigate other means of transportation, such as carpooling with other families
If your family consistently struggles with school attendance, professionals suggest tracking the average time you’re late by and adding that time accordingly to your schedule. For example: if you are consistently 15 to 30 minutes late in the morning, set your alarm 15 to 30 minutes earlier. Doing this creates a cushion of extra time for unexpected delays.
Attendance Policy
Please make sure you are calling your students in absent when they are going to be absent from school. Our Attendance line is checked daily to ensure your student"s attendance is correct. When calling the attendance line, please state the reason for their absence. If you have any questions please call the office. 970-613-7101
