Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent Teacher Conferences will be held at the following times:

September 29th 4:00 - 8:00 pm

September 30th 8:15-8:00 pm

We are so excited to schedule time with each of our families to talk about their students and their learning. We will be scheduling all conferences as Zoom conferences this fall, unless a family specifically requests an in-person option. Teachers will be in touch to help you get signed up for a time that works best for your family.

Overwhelming feedback from last year informed us that utilizing Zoom for conferences was an effective and efficient way for teachers and parents to connect. As a parent, you didn’t have to leave work, didn’t have travel time, and especially with elementary students, didn’t have to worry about child care needs.

Aloha,

Welcome back to school!! We at Hawaiian Bros hope your summer was restful!

Hawaiian Bros would love to partner with our schools in any way we can. We know that the beginning of the school year can be stressful and crazy busy, so one way we thought of to help lower your stress is to offer a way for students, teachers, and staff to win a $50 gift card to Hawaiian Bros.

Attached is a BTS giveaway that Hawaiian Bros is pushing out Starting Aug. 15th running though Sept. 30th. A winner will be chosen each week!! If this is something you would want your schools/district to participate in, please feel free to post the attached graphic on your websites, daily announcements, and/or weekly bulletins.

Let Hawaiian Bros know how we can partner and support you throughout the school year!!

Good Luck and have a great year!!

Mahalo,

Tonya Truster

BV Substitutes

“How can I help?” It’s one of the most common questions we hear from our Blue Valley community these days and it is what makes our community so special: your willingness to lend a helping hand and provide support during difficult times. Our students need us now more than ever, and in order to support them in the best way possible, we need our community. We are currently looking for substitutes. If you have completed 60 college credits, you are eligible to apply for an emergency substitute license. If you are available one day a week, or even a couple days a month, consider applying to become a substitute. For more information, please contact Kaitlyn Drew at KMDrew@bluevalleyk12.org.

Canvas Learning Management System

Attn BV families! Need a refresher on @CanvasLMS, our learning management system for grades K-12, or looking to set up a new account? We’ve got you covered! Check out how to access or set up your Canvas Observer account as a parent or review this Canvas Parent/Guardian Orientation. Remember, Canvas courses won’t appear until teachers publish them after the school year has started.

Reach out with any questions,

Bus Tracker & Textcaster Information for Families

Durham Bus Services has three helpful tools for families with bus riders. Registration is required each year for families as bus routes and participants change:

  1. Bus Tracker: The Blue Valley Durham location will be using the Bus Tracker mobile app that is available for iOS and Android devices. To use the app, users will create an account that is tied to an email address of the user’s choice. The tool will allow account users to follow the route of a specific bus. Durham is updating daily when a scheduled backup bus is being used for a planned maintenance activity. If a bus is replaced with a quick turnaround due to an unforeseen event, Durham dispatch will make the switch on Bus Tracker at their next opportunity to update the app.

  2. Text Messaging: Families are still encouraged to sign up for Durham Text Messaging. The system is designed to share the “why” as Bus Tracker is designed to tell the “where”. To sign up for Durham Text Messaging visit www.bluevalleydurham.com.

  3. E-Link: Allows for verification of a student’s transportation information (i.e., stop location, bus # and pick-up and drop off times) based on the input of grade and home address. To access E-Link, go to www.bluevalleydurham.com.

Nut Safer Information

Blue Valley School’s Nut Safer Guidelines will be implemented throughout the school year for daily snacks.

· Classroom snacks must be from the Nut Safer list.

· Nut Safer seating is available in the café during lunch

The complete list of Nut Safer foods and BV Guidelines can be found here: Nut Safer Guidelines

Early Childhood Toy Drive

Have Paw Patrol, Frozen, and Toy Story run their course in your house? We are collecting gently used toys and other items featuring any favorite characters from movies or TV shows. These can still be highly motivating for some of our youngest learners. Items can be brought to school in a box or bag marked “EC Toy Drive.” Much Thanks! -- Kendall Burr, Principal of Early Childhood Programs

Notes from the Nurse:

Health Files:

Immunizations, Physical Assessments, and Birth Certificates are past due. These forms are needed to attend school and can be emailed, faxed, or brought into the office.

Water bottles:

Please remind your student to bring a water bottle to school each day. Our water fountains are closed at this time.

Masks:

Please send your student each day with a mask and remind them to be wearing their masks properly. The mask should cover from nose to chin and gaiters should be snug enough not to need constant adjustment throughout the day. Having a backup mask in their backpack so if it becomes wet or soiled would also be very helpful.

Change of clothes:

Please have your child keep weather appropriate change of clothes in their backpack. If a spill, mess, or bathroom accident occurs during the school day your child can then quickly change into their own clothes and return to class.

When to stay home:

Blue Valley utilizes the Johnson County Health Department exclusion criteria regarding COVID symptoms. If your child has one primary symptom or two secondary symtpoms they will need a PCR test, a doctor’s note, or to stay home for 10 days.

Counselor Corner

What a joy it has been to get back into the school year with your students! I missed their sweet smiles and tender hearts over the summer. We’ve jumped feet first into the school year and my office space is getting loved on by several staff and parents and many students already. I’ve actually been able to meet face to face with parents and it sure feels great! If you need to contact me for any reason, the quickest way to reach me is through my email at RNab@bluevalleyk12.org. I can give you a call back or we can set up a time to meet that is convenient for you.

I’ve made it to all classrooms for counselor classroom lessons. All students have been introduced to the counselor and reminded of what I do up here at school, why they might want to come to my office, and how exactly to make that happen. This week, Kindergarten’s lesson focused on whole-body listening. We read “Howard Wigglebottom Learns to Listen” and had a coloring page to go along with the lesson. First grade friends and I read, “The Invisible String”. We talked about even when those that we love are not with us, we are never alone--but connected by our invisible strings fueled by love. Second grade got to play a game-show to review expected and unexpected behaviors and how that applies to them when learning and having fun here at school. Lastly, lunch groups have started and I’m grabbing five students from a class each day to each lunch in my office. I LOVE this time. The unstructured environment allows for great conversation and lots of laughs. I can’t wait to meet like this with ALL our students. Woohoo! That’s a wrap! Have a beautiful weekend.

Hugs,

Rachel Nab
