Mesa Panthers 2021
Principal's Desk
Greetings, Panther Nation!
I believe that Mesa has earned a reputation for academic excellence through the hard work of our students, teachers, parents, and staff. When I started back in the fall of 2018, it was evident that this school had many potentials. Fast forward, several years and the evidence is here, 176 of our students achieved a 3.0 or higher GPA for Quarter 1. This success is an incredible feat to accomplish through the hard work of our teachers, students, and parents.
At Mesa, we believe that it is essential for our students to be connected to the school through positive relationships and a strong sense of community. I believe that every student can learn and be successful if provided the right supports and opportunities. Our teachers and staff are committed to providing all students with an appropriate and challenging educational experience in a respectful environment that fosters learning and growth.
A crucial part of success for students in attendance is to develop the habit of showing up. As a parent or guardian, you need to maintain an "Every Day Counts" attitude for students to be in school and ready to learn each day. At Mesa, we will assist in helping parents and families understand the importance of instructional time and school attendance.
Additionally, we recognize that family and community support are integral to our success.
Parents/Guardians play the most critical roles in a student's success, and I invite you to collaborate with us in your student's education. When we take the time to strategically plan, forge positive relationships, celebrate our achievements, and continue to build on our successful foundation, we can foster a learning environment where our entire Mesa and Eastside community thrives. Mesa is a place where exceptional teaching and learning is the expectation.
Tic Tok has taken on a new role in our schools; we choose to integrate it with instruction. However, what has been concerning is the destruction or theft of school property by students. Most recently, students have been cutting the plastic student seats using the disposable facemask elastic string. As farfetched as it may sound, videos found online prove that it indeed cuts the plastic. I have placed an order to replace these seats to the tune of $5000.00. Please continue to talk to your student(s) about the challenges they may see on Tic Tok and its impact on the schools.
We are about two months into the construction of our new building. We are very excited and
celebrated a groundbreaking ceremony on October 8th. We desired to invite the community, but COVID guidelines limited what we were able to do. Would you please watch our video by clicking the following link or typing it to your web browser: https://youtu.be/BLs_k7mSlcQ

Classroom Updates
7th Grade Social Studies
Estudios Sociales de 7mo Grado
Ms. Flores 7th grade Social Studies class researched "Spooky places in New Mexico" Students were able to choose a spooky place to research and tell the story of what makes it so spooky. Students were eager to share what they learned with their class. Their stories and artwork line
the hallways of Mesa. Many students asked, "Is Mesa haunted"? We could not find evidence online, however, stories have been told!!
Mrs. Jones' English Class
Gifted and Honors ELA 8th finished up their adventures through Treasure Island this week. The
students have read, listen to, and watched different takes on Robert Louis Stevenson's original
classic. Students will soon jump into writing arguments and researching an argument of their
choosing to create a 5-paragraph essay to present to the class. Students will also be working on
citing their sources from their research in their writing.
Mrs. Rincon's Music Dept.
Music Department Notes…
At the first of October, the music department competed in the Eastern New Mexico State Fair Parade and wrapped up their fourteenth win for our school. They worked hard and sounded great! Their next performance is at Band Night where they will join RHS, GHS, and the three other middle schools to put on a huge performance during the Roswell Goddard football game at halftime. The music department will then move towards preparing for the upcoming holiday events.
Through all the preparations for performances, they have also been working hard on learning their music theory. The students took a baseline assessment so that growth can be tracked throughout the year and we will be sharing with you the increase of proficiency and learning after their next quarter assessment. The students track their formative and summative assessments regularly, so please ask your student to share with you their progress often.
If you ever would like to know more about the music department and all the exciting things that take place, please reach out to crincon@risd.k12.nm.us.

Goooood morning MESA Panthers, this is not a trick or treat this is the PANTHERS!
This is Click reporting for the 7th grade students. We will continue to work on Ratio and Constant of Proportionality within the circle and squares. They are using graphs to justify if it is proportional, as well as, finding the constant, calculate the constant of proportion (k) for each table, and express your answer as y = kx by substituting the value of k in the equation.

Goooood morning! French is reporting that his 8th grade students are working on linear relationships, focused on proportional and non-proportional relationships shown in tables. Students are writing slope of a line, equation of a line, and graphing the line on the coordinate plane, all from the data shown in the table.
Yes, it is Taylor coming to you with evaluating expressions. What! We will write and solve linear equations in one variable. No, let us follow the Illustrative Mathematics trail. As the unit changes, I will get you my little Panther! The time will come when you will understand equations in which the variable occurs on both sides of the equal sign, and equations with solutions. We will have an understanding that any one such equation is false, true for one value of the variable, or true for all values of the variable. The 8th grade math standard includes solving real-world and mathematical problems by writing and solving inequalities in one variable.
Goooooood morning! The 6th grade students are working on Unit Rates and Percentages, as well as, having an understanding of Dividing Fractions. In the dividing unit, students examine how the relative sizes of numerator and denominator affect the size of their quotient when numerator or denominator (or both) are a fraction. The acquire the understanding that dividing by a/b has the same outcome as multiplying by the receptacle b, they by 1/a. They compute quotients of fractions. They solve problems involving lengths and area of figures. In the Accelerated 6th Grade Math, students are working with graphing tables to find they are proportional and finding the constant of proportionality. They are working to have an understanding of quartiles and plotting. They will continue to challenge themselves in working the 6th and 7th grade standards.
Goooooood morning! This is a trademark! The Mathematic Team at Mesa Middle School urge each other to adopt a defense of mathematical concepts that will advance and lead our students into the next century. Why can’t this be shared, it is what is going on here now? Talking about mathematics, it is not a secret that can’t be told, but we know it is all about mathematics to us, The Roaring Panthers.

Mr. Hartwick's Art Class
This month in art class, students studied the art of beautification in urban areas. Students selected local areas within Roswell to make visual improvements. Students were asked to challenge their preconceived notions of Roswell by transforming their local areas. All of the visual improvements had to consider the history and function of the selected locations. Visual improvements that students conceived of included murals, benches and even toys.
Honor Society
Mesa Middle School Honor Society advisor Ms. Flores, sent out letters to 174 students who qualified academically to be considered for Honor Society. These students had a 3.0 GPA or better. This is a great accomplishment and congratulations to all of those students.
On Wednesday October 27th, Mesa Honor Society hosted the "Haunted Bus". Students brought a canned food to enter the bus. There were about 200 students who participated. We collected over 300 cans of food to donate to the Roswell Community Disaster Relief. Thank you, Enrique Moreno for taking your time to bring the "Haunted Bus" to Mesa.
Secretary's Note
Huge shout out to our Amazing office aides for all there help! We would be exhausted without
them!!!!
Ms. Del Angel's Reading
We had an amazing start for the month of November. Our class artists in student advisory competed in a door decorating contest for Red Ribbon Week. We started with learning the differences and similarities between Halloween and Dia de los Muertos. Students learned about Día de los Muertos and made a mini-school book. Students also practiced writing a Comparison and Contrast Essay that compared the two holidays. We also will be working on our writing abilities every Wednesday. Will also be learning about New Mexico Native American tribes in honor of Native American Heritage Month. Students will practice writing descriptive essays to describe and share what they have learned about the different types of Native American dances and the different tribes located in New Mexico. We will also read and write about Veteran’s Day and share our personal experiences. We will soon be finishing up our units on Bats and Jazz music. Students will begin their new units towards the end of
the month. The new units will include non-fiction passages and student will learn about Dr. Serreno, paleontologist, and his discovery of a dinosaur named Jobaria as well as text about pollution. Students will continue to learn vocabulary and how to identify main idea and supporting details.
Lady Panther's Volleyball
Volleyball season has come and gone! Congratulations, to the lady panthers on a great season. 7th grade finished off in 3rd just barely missing the chance to go to championship game losing to Mt. View in the 3rd set tie breaker. They defeated every school but came short in the end. Good job on all the hard work and determination, keep up the good work.
8th grade had a rocky start. We were short girls and had to forfeit half of the season but the girls
continued to come to practice every day and worked on getting better. Much improvement in those girls who have continued to keep playing and not giving up. We were able to play in the city tournament and got one regular season game against Mt. View and defeated them in 2 sets. Border conference tournament was tough but the girls played through till the end. Great job girls!
