West Edgecombe Middle School
Quarter 2 Spokes
It is a new quarter and with that comes new learning! This quarter students will be diving into their passions through the lens of career exploration! Using sites like Wonderopolis, students explore questions and research their answers with a perspective on creating a career based product that better services the community. We are a week in to this quarter long project and are excited to see where student passion and innovation lead us in the coming weeks!
Some of the careers that students are interested in researching include:
- Veterinarian
- Ballet Instructor
- Doctor
- Football Player
- Mechanical Engineer
- Car Salesman
- Chef
- Teacher
While another class is researching the broader fields before they narrow down their specific career choices:
- Cosmetology
- Oceanography
- Sports Medicine
- Digital Programming
And so much more! We are looking forward to seeing where their exploration of these fields takes them.
In Mrs. Bradley's Class
In Ms. Concepcion's Class
Her 6th grade class will begin reading William Kamkwamba's The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, the true story of how William used Design Thinking (much like our Spokes classes) to confront the devastating effects of famine in his country, Malawi.
Her 7th grade class will begin reading Patient Zero by Marilee Peters, an all too timely book about the spread of diseases and the nature of epidemics. Students will get to think critically about how epidemics can affect society in more ways than just diseases, such as "social epidemics".
In Mr. Hughes' Class
Meanwhile, he went in the opposite directions with his 7th graders! He just started a unit looking at cells and what makes up all living things. Starting from single-celled organisms and working up through plant and animal cells, his students will get to explore the smaller Universe.
