SHS works with local agencies perform full-scale safety drill to help keep students, staff safe
Scottsburg High School partnered with several local emergency service agencies to perform a full-scale safety exercise on Sept. 13 — about eight months after extensive planning and preparation between school officials, law enforcement, and other emergency agencies. Through this full-scale safety exercise, area law enforcement and emergency services personnel were able to work with the school to ensure safety plans and procedures help keep students safe.
First responders, school staff, and students participated in the full-scale safety exercise on that Thursday morning, keeping the drill as real-life as possible. Students and staff participated in a Level Red lockdown as part of the safety process. Law enforcement officers responded to the lockdown event to contain the threat and stabilize the scene as outlined in the SHS safety procedures. Then, emergency medical service personnel continued the training by responding, triaging, and transporting student actors, who played a role to help the local agencies test their responses and procedures.
After the law enforcement stabilized the scene and EMS personnel completed their part, a mass evacuation of the student body went to the Family Reunification Site. Local law enforcement and school officials were there to oversee and direct the process. At the site, school and emergency officials debriefed students and staff members about the exercise before heading back to SHS to resume the school day.
At Scott County School District 2, the safety of students and staff are of the utmost importance. By working with local emergency agencies, the school was able to practice its safety procedures to ensure the highest level of safety for everyone.
