Integrated Learning
5,4,3,2,1 BLAST OFF! We have lift off! This month we are learning about space, the planets, stars, astronauts, and our solar system. We've created our own version of outer space for our hallway, including Earth on one wall, Mars on the other, and the rest of the planets and several stars hanging from the ceiling. We will also talk about recycling and ways to keep the Earth clean. We will read The Earth Book, Stars, and Michael Recycle.
Centers include:
- Ordinal number planets
- Solar System color code
- Recycling Bingo
- Sort recycling items
Social Studies
We will finish our "Taking Care of Yourself" unit by learning how to live a healthy lifestyle.
A few of the centers include:

- Using safety signs with riding tricycles
- Book Page: "I take care of myself by..."
- Learning and understanding healthy foods with the "My Plate" game http://www.choosemyplate.gov/
Literacy
Your child will be learning about the letters Yy and Ww. We will read The Yak Who Yelled Yuck and Worm's Wagon. A few of our centers will include:
-
Egg yolk matching upper- and lowercase letters
Y and W words I can write
Water coloring
- Watermelon addition
- Beebots with the Alphabet
Science
We will begin our study of force and motion and will integrate simple machines into our learning. We will read various books about force and motion, including How Do You Lift a Lion? by Robert E. Wells. Your child will get to play with yo-yos, use rolling pins to roll out Play-Doh, and use levers to launch cotton balls.
Environmental Science
We hope to go across our new Ring Road soon to visit our bird nest materials that we spread outside for the birds. We hope the birds will use them. If most of our yarns, newspaper strips, and “fuzzy wuzzys” are gone; we know the birds found them for their nests!! Spring is also a great time to introduce seeds and the concept of a little plant living inside. By planting marigold seeds in pots in our greenhouse, the PreK’s hope to prove that it is true! Since your child’s seedling will be coming home to your house in late April, please be thinking of a safe (dog-free) sunny space (garden or pot) for their little plant to thrive. Directions will come with their marigold plant. Happy Gardening!
Ask your child...
- How many planets are in the solar system?
- What is force?
- What is in a seed?
