120th day of school

In first grade, we do some extra special activites on the 120th day of school since our standards focus on the numbers up to 120. We had a day filled with multiple activities based on the number 120 this past Wednesday. See below a few pictures from our 120th day.

I sent home today in everyone's green folder information about two different Highlight Magazines that the company offers. If you would like to purchase one or the other please fill out the information and return it to school with your child. Even if you are not interested please just sign your name and check no thank you. We get free items for the classroom when I mail these in. By singing you are just stating that I sent it home. Thank you!!

It's Time to Order Yearbooks!

Yearbook orders are due by March 15, 2015. The cost of the yearbook is $15 per book. We encourage you to place an order on the website: Inter-state.com/yearbook You will just need to enter in the code: 748563 to place an order. All yearbooks ordered online, will be shipped to TCE. Checks should be made out to Thorpe Creek Elementary. Happy ordering!

Recess

Please keep in mind that we will be going outside for recess unless the wind chill is below 25. Make sure to send your child to school with an appropriate coat, gloves and hat for being outside 20-30 minutes everyday.

Things we are collecting...

There are several items that we are always collecting at school. Feel free to send them in whenever you need to.

  • all plastic bottle caps and lids for our buddy bench project

Coming up next week....

Reading -In honor of Dr.Seuss' birthday on March 2nd we will be focusing on his books this week. We will be reviewing the setting, problem, and solution of each story as well as doing various activities related to each story. We will continue to discuss the main idea in the stories that we are reading.


Spelling - New spelling lists will be sent home on Monday. Your child will be tested over these words and the below sight words on Friday, March 13th.

Our sight words for the next 2 weeks will be:

first, new, try, must, start


Writing - We will continue working on our fiction writing for our Young Author books. We will continue to talk about adjectives and how they help the reader to see a story the way the writer sees it.


Math - We will finish working on our topic of geometry and refocus back on addition and subtraction. This time we will be looking at adding and subtracting groups of tens and double digit numbers.


Science - We will begin our next science topic which will focus on soil. We will be discussing the different types of soil as well as the characteristics of these types.
