Parent information of Safety Concern
The safety of our students and staff continues to be our first priority. As a result, I wanted to be proactive and inform our families that we have recently received several reports of middle school students using vapor pens or e-cigarettes outside of school and posting it on social media.
Through conversations with students regarding this report, several students shared that these vapor pens were brought to school last week. We investigated claims but did not find any evidence of vapor pens or products.
While no vapor pens or products were found at school, parents need to know that this is a concern as students reported to us that vapor pen use is widespread after school, especially for students who walk home after school. Students need to understand that although these products are not traditional tobacco products, they can still have nicotine placed inside as well as many other liquid substances that can cause harm.
Vaping products can look like a jump drive that you plug into a computer which helps disguise the product from parents. Click on the two links to get more information about vaping and the rise in teenage usage. Please review our handbook with your children and review discipline policies and procedures. Possession or use of vapor products is considered a critical infraction and students will be subject to disciplinary action.
Please take this opportunity to discuss with your children good decision making and what to say if someone offers your child the use of a vapor product.
Please contact me should you have any questions.
Respectfully,
Johnny Billingsley
