Glen Ellyn Public Library Empathy Expo
District 41 students will have work from their Problem-Based Learning (PBL) unit “to foster empathy for those with disabilities” on display at the Glen Ellyn Public Library's Empathy Expo this week,Thursday-Sunday. The focus of the Expo this year is visual impairments.
Hadley 8th graders have created experiences to replicate life with a visual impairment. Additionally, students have created or re-engineered games and books to make them accessible for individuals with visual impairments. Some of the 8th grade students will be at the Library tomorrow, January 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. to demonstrate their designs.
Fifth grade students from across the district will also showcase their “Art, Book, or Game” products for the visually impaired at the expo tonight, January 8 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This event will also serve as the 5th Grade STEAM Open House for District 41. During the month of December students prepared for the expo in class and had the opportunity to share and receive feedback from experts about their ideas.
Thank you to the Glen Ellyn Public Library for inviting District 41 to participate in this special community program! The expo is free and open to the public!

Substitute Spotlight - Willie Di Fabio
The substitute spotlight is a monthly recognition program that showcases one of our many great substitutes. The honored substitute is nominated by a staff member within the district and then randomly chosen to be featured in the spotlight each month.
This month we celebrate Willie Di Fabio. A teacher who nominated Mr. Di Fabio said, “Willie exudes compassion and empathy. His students' eyes light up when they walk in and see Willie as their substitute teacher. He is always student-centered and makes it a point to talk to me about students he is concerned about and follows up the next time he is here. He is friendly to all our staff. He takes the time to listen and collaborate; he wants to be a part of the plan and solution. To say we are privileged to have him is an understatement.”
In an interview with human resources, Mr. Di Fabio responded to the following questions:
How long have you subbed for District 41?
11 years
What attracted you to become a substitute at Glen Ellyn School District 41?
After I retired, I hiked the Appalachian trail and I was not sure what I wanted to next. I knew that I did not want to return back to work so I decided to try substitute teaching. I enjoy it here at District 41, I feel that I am supported by teachers and I enjoy the leadership that the district provides. Being a substitute challenges me to learn new things everyday. I enjoy the challenge of substitute teaching, it is where my heart is.
What do you enjoy most about substituting in our district?
That the district's mission is to support kids. The satisfaction of helping kids and teachers is truly what I enjoy. It's become part of my life and provides a sense of engagement.
What or who inspires you?
Teachers inspire me, they are responsible for the development of these kids. This is a position that requires a lot of energy. My wife also inspires me, she is very adaptable.
What are some of your hobbies/interests outside of substituting?
Hiking, backpacking, walking, and reading.
