Science and Innovation Fair Rules and Guidelines
The following rules and requirements apply to all Hinkle Creek Science Fair projects.
1. All students will choose a question to explore and will come up with a procedure to test their hypothesis.
2. All projects must conform to the Science Fair size limit – no wider than 36” by 24” deep. Projects not conforming to the size limit will not be judged.
3. All projects must be free standing. Poster board is too flimsy and won’t stand up by itself. Use stiff cardboard, plywood, pegboard, or other materials. Display boards can typically be found at Walmart, Dollar Tree, Meijer, etc.
4. Projects will be identified by number only, which will be assigned by the Science and Innovation Fair chairperson. Names of the participants must not appear on the front of the project board.
5. If a display uses electricity, the participant must bring his/her own extension cord.
6. Setup will take place from 3:30-4:30 on Wednesday, February 16th. If you are unable to help your child set up at this time, please reach out to one of the sponsors to set up a time to drop off your child's project prior to Thursday, February 17th.
7. Judging will take place during the school day. Participants must be with the projects when the projects are judged.
8. If a student is unable to present their project due to illness or quarantine, parents should contact one of the HC Science Fair coordinators ASAP to set up an alternate presentation.
9. No live animals or animal tissue will be allowed at the Science and Innovation Fair. Projects may involve animals, but the display must not have the animals present. Use photos and/or models instead. This rule complies with the Central Indiana Regional Science Fair rules.
10. Two students may work on a project together, but they must be in the same grade and classroom. Both students must submit an entry form with parent permission, and both students must be in attendance at the project presentation for the project to be considered. If a partnership is to be dissolved, please notify Mrs. Zeltwanger or Mr. Brugman as soon as possible.
11. Participants in grades 3, 4, and 5 are required to write a one page abstract to accompany the project. For more information on writing an abstract, click here. Formal research reports are not required for the Hinkle Creek Science Fair.
12. Awards will take place on Friday, February 18th during the school day.
13. Fourth and fifth grade champions are eligible to participate in the Central Indiana Regional Science Fair, which will take place on March 19th, 2022.
