the Sunrise Scoop
Week of January 30, 2022
Principal's Message
Congratulations to Mrs. Snow and several of our sea turtle students who had their art work displayed in the Melbourne Mall Art Show. This exhibit displayed student artwork from schools in the south area of Brevard. We are very proud to have a passionate art teacher who places great emphasis on the standards of art education. Our students' art work featured summary cards in which the students wrote about the educational component of their piece. Way to go Sea Turtles!
This past week, our students and staff enjoyed participating in Literacy Week. We caught many students reading! Those who were caught reading entered their ticket into a drawing for a free book. We were able to give out over 100 new books to our sea turtles this week. Thank you for joining in on our spirit days and demonstrating your support and love for all things literacy. Our annual book character spud competition was a hit! We would like to thank our wonderful Literacy Coach, Mrs. Elliott, and our Sunrise English-Language Art Committee for supporting these events. Please enjoy some of the fun photos below.
Our Sunrise Odyssey of the Mind Teams will have their regional competition on Saturday, February 5th at Viera High School. We are very excited for these hard-working students, and we look forward to this event. Thank you to Mrs. Phillips (a.k.a. Ms. Shishilla, she recently married) for being our Sunrise OM Coach this year. Thank you also to our other staff members and parent volunteers for supporting our teams.
The Sunrise School Science Fair for grades 4-6th will be the week of February 14th, with judging taking place on February 17th. Students must have all required pieces and forms signed to officially enter the fair. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you have any questions. Students in primary grades will share and display one class project with the school. Students will have the opportunity to view the projects throughout the week. Science Fair Awards Night for winners will be held February 22nd from 5-6 p.m. in our cafeteria.
Interim Reports will be posted to FOCUS on February 14th to provide students and parents with a progress update. Please note, February 7th, 18th, and 21st there is no school for students.
Please mark your calendars for our Title I Literacy and Social Studies Family Engagement Night on March 10th. Mrs. Snow will have student art work displayed, and Mrs. Arner will facilitate musical performances for each grade level. Each Sunrise student will receive a free book related to their grade level social studies standards. We encourage our Sea Turtle families to "Bee" There! Kona Ice will be stopping by. This will be an indoor and outdoor event, so we will have plenty of room to spread out safely for social distancing.
In closing, I would like to thank parents of our sea turtle students who ride buses. As you know, employees being out sick also impacts our transportation department. They are doing their best to ensure bus routes are covered and communication is sent out in a timely manner. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work together to make sure student safety always remains our first priority.
We have several chilly days this week. Students, remember to bring a jacket for outside time. If you are missing your jacket, please check our Lost and Found cart in the Commons Area. Have a wonderful week everyone!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Jost

Sunrise is a Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) Model School
We center our actions on core standards of Be Safe! Work Hard! Be Nice! Students earn tokens and positive office referrals for going above and beyond to demonstrate these three Sunrise Standards and our PBIS expectations which fall under these standards. Students use their earned tokens to spend in our quarterly PBIS store. Please continue to encourage your sea turtles to follow our Sunrise Standards: Be Safe! Work Hard! Be Kind!
Positive Office Referrals: Students also enjoy receiving Positive Office Referrals for going above and beyond to demonstrate these Sunrise Standards. When students receive a Positive Office Referral, they receive a phone call from Mrs. Jost and Mrs. Isaacs into their classroom. The teacher places the call on “speaker phone” and the entire class gets to celebrate and congratulate their classmate on the referral. The student also receives a free kid’s meal from our business partners at Texas Roadhouse, along with administration’s specialty charms (Mrs. Jost’s is a dolphin and Mrs. Isaac’s is a lightning bolt) and a pencil. These charms are worth 2 at our quarterly PBIS thumb store. Students are also recognized and congratulated on WSUN, our morning news network. Student’s names are also written each quarter on the PBIS bulletin board outside of the front office. Parents, please be on the lookout for these referrals in your child’s backpack. We do send a copy home.
PBIS Standards Posters: Being a gold model PBIS school requires us to fulfill specific PBIS guidelines and expectations. One of these requirements is to ensure we have our standards posted around the school expectations are visible and clear to students and staff. We have expectations for the hallway, recess, cafeteria, and classroom. Mrs. Woodward and our PBIS committee identified the need to add bus and car loop to our expectation posters. In addition, our committee decided to amend our Be Nice standard to the language of Be Kind, as being kind is promoted more significantly in society. We are in the process of purchasing updated posters for our campus. Our new posters will reflect the amended standard of Be Kind.
Arrival & Dismissal Procedures
Morning Arrival Reminders
We thank you for adhering to our campus safety guidelines of not dropping off your child earlier than 7:30 a.m. as there is no supervision on campus until 7:30 a.m.
If your child will be eating breakfast at school, please drop off your child no later than 7:40 a.m. so there is time to eat before instruction begins at 8 a.m. Late student arrivals (after 8 a.m.) must be escorted to the front office by a parent for check-in. The morning car loop begins wrapping up around 7:55 a.m.
Tardy Students
Any student arriving after 8:00 a.m. must be escorted to the front office and signed in by a parent/guardian. The student must be present in the office with you to receive a tardy slip by one of our staff members. Please do not send your child to class prior to them receiving their tardy slip by a Sunrise employee. Thank you!
Dismissal Reminders
Dismissal is 2:30 p.m. daily and 1:15 p.m. EVERY Friday
Please note, our dismissal will be delayed if there is rainy or inclement weather during this time. Your patience is appreciated.
Approved Methods for Student Dismissal
Registered Bus Rider, Sunrise BAS program, Private Daycare Van Rider, Biker/Walker* (no vehicle drive ups*), or Car Loop
Dismissal via parent walk-up is not permitted. If you have a one-time specific circumstance, please go to the front office. Our staff will be happy to assist you. *Parents are welcome to walk-up to our biker/walker gate to meet their child to walk home. Parents entering the front gates via vehicle for student pick-up must use the car loop please.
We kindly ask you do not check out your students to avoid the car loop. Beginning at 2:15 p.m., our office staff begins working to help ensure our entire campus of students get home correctly and safely.
Car Loop Procedures
Please use both lanes of traffic once you pass the Welcome to Sunrise sign at the front entrance past the gates. If both lanes are not used, traffic will back up onto Mara Loma Blvd. and Babcock Street. Please do not block the lane of traffic used for vehicles exiting the parking lot. Form the second lane once you pass the welcome sign please. Once you approach the front of the school, a Sunrise staff member will help you merge to the correct lane for the pick-up of your student(s). If you are only picking up PreK or Kinder students, you will merge into the left lane and bypass the pick-up line in front of the school. You will get into line at the west end of the building near the bike rack for PreK/Kinder pick-up. If you are picking up 1st through 6th grade students, you will merge into the right lane and proceed to the pick-up line directly in front of the school. If you are picking up both, you will merge into the right lane to pick up your 1st through 6th grader(s) first, and then you will proceed down to the PreK/Kindergarten line. Our car loop will be slow during inclement weather. We thank you in advance for your patience. For your planning, our car loop has been running from 2:30 p.m. to about 2:45/2:50 p.m. Our goal is always student safety first. Please keep your car tag visible for our staff to see while in the car loop.
