I am happy to be sharing my newsletter through a new tool, Smore! This will allow me to send regular updates, share pictures, and give a head's up for important information. This is my first run with it. What do you think? It's both easy to use and useful to have!

MOST RECENT: Principal Parent Chat


On Wednesday, May 12, 2021, I hosted another "Principal Parent Chat" event.


Once again, we had a great discussion, and families asked great questions. I also addressed some concerns and followed up with parents via phone calls afterward. Below are the topics and responses we discussed that day.

CLASS OF 2021 GRADUATION

This school year, we will be holding multiple graduations for the Class of 2021 in our beautiful courtyard space. Our graduates began their journey at Edison, and we wanted to provide an opportunity for our last gathering to be held in the same space where it all started.


Also, we will be holding our Virtual Class of 2021 Graduation on June 18th at 6:30 PM.


We have selected the following dates and times for each graduation aligned to their CTE course of study.


  • June 21 at 1:00 PM: Electrical Installation & Robotics/Drone Engineering
  • June 21 at 3:00 PM: Collision and Refinishing & Medical Assisting
  • June 21 at 5:00 PM: Automotive Technology


  • June 22 at 1:00 PM: Graphic Arts

CLASS OF 2021 CAP and GOWN DISTRIBUTION

On Monday, June 14, we will be distributing the caps and gowns for our graduates.


Students are expected to come to pick up their cap and gown at the time indicated below based on their last name.


If your LAST name beginnings with:


  • A, B, or C you are scheduled to come in at 8:30 AM
  • D, E, F, or G, you are scheduled to come in at 9:00 AM
  • H, I, or J you are scheduled to come in at 9:30 AM
  • K, L, or M, you are scheduled to come in at 10:00 AM
  • N, O, P, or Q, you are scheduled to come in at 10:30 AM
  • R, S, T, or U, you are scheduled to come in at 11:00 AM
  • V, W, X, Y, or Z, you are scheduled to come in at 11:30 AM


CLASS OF 2021 YEARBOOK

Yearbooks must be purchased through the Edison website or in person by May 28th.

If you would like to pay at the school, you must bring EXACT CASH or a Money Order made payable to Thomas A Edison CTE High School (in the memo put for the yearbook and your OSIS#). Personal checks will NOT be accepted. You may enter on Monday or Friday mornings until May 28 to pay between 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM.

CLASS OF 2021 RETURN OF EDISON PROPERTY

Students must return all Edison property before receiving a DIPLOMA.


Textbooks & Calculators:

You may come to the building (Main Entrance) to return textbooks and calculators on May 14, 17, 21, 24, and 28 between 8:30 AM -11:15 AM.


Electronic Devices. i.e., Ipad, Chromebook, Lenovo, and or Apple Laptop:

Students may come to the building (Main Entrance) to return their devices on June 11th, 14th, and 18th between 8:00 AM - 11:15 AM.


*Students will have the option to keep their devices until after regents week to take a regents exam. Please contact Mr.Haripersaud via email if you need to hold on to the device at NHaripersaud@schools.nyc.gov.


*Please note that you will not be able to pick up your diploma until all Edison property is returned.


CLASS OF 2022 GRADUATION/YEARBOOK PORTRAIT PICTURE

Every year we coordinate the Juniors (11th Graders) to have their graduation/yearbook portrait picture taken at Edison. Sign up for a convenient appointment during the available days and times. This is for your Graduation Photo Session, both to appear in your school yearbook and so you can purchase the mementos of High School Graduation Portraits.


Please sign up for only one appointment to allow everyone the opportunity to be photographed.

SUMMER SCHOOL UPDATE

This summer school, we plan to offer various opportunities to engage our students in different educational activities. We want to provide the following: traditional summer school (for students to make up courses to remediate NX grades and get back on track for graduation); enrichment courses; and/or courses that will accelerate progress toward graduation.


We are surveying our families and students to gather the information that will help us better serve students during this year's upcoming summer school session.

Public School Athletic Leauge (PSAL)

We have activated the following sports teams based on the availability of coaches:

  • Baseball Boys
  • Soccer Boys
  • Softball Girls
  • Tracker and Field Boys
  • Volleyball Girls


* Please be advised that we will not keep the sports teams active if we don't have enough students applying to play. Former athletes should reach out to their coaches for additional information.


Senior Graduation UPDATE

Regents Examination UPDATE

  • New York State Education Department (NYSED) is currently planning to offer limited June 2021 Regents exams and has canceled all August 2021 Regents exams.
  • An email was sent out via PupilPath, which includes eligibility information related to the June/August 2021 Regents exam waivers.
  • For additional information, please contact your child's guidance counselor.
  • Guidance on the process to schedule students to receive these waivers is forthcoming in a future edition of the Principal's Newsletter.


Family Support Workshops (6 Workshop Sessions)

  • We are offering once again the Family Support Workshops in collaboration with the PTA/PAC. The workshops will provide our families with a series of best practices to support your child with their remote learning experience.
  • All 6 sessions will be held Tuesday and Thursday from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm.

Reopening Edison

On March 22nd, we are planning on reopening Edison. Please make sure you are listed as a Blended Learning Student and that you have completed your COVID Consent Form (See Below for Directions).


Reopening Edison for CTE Training

CTE training is currently being offered on Saturdays, and students need to sign up on Thursdays via the CTE Training Google Form. This form is emailed to students, and it is on a first-come, first-served basis. All students, regardless if they are on remote or blended learning instruction, must complete their consent form for COVID-19 testing.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Curriculum

  • We have partnered with Intel, and we will be introducing an AI curriculum within our CTE Digital Media program. Next school year, we will be offering an after-school AI club.
  • A brand new AI lab is currently being designed to support the new and advanced curriculum.


Saturday CTE School

  • Beginning March 13, 2021, we will be opening our school on Saturdays to provide our students the opportunity to offer hands-on training. Our CTE programs culminate in an industry certification that contains a performance assessment. Therefore, we are opening our CTE labs to prepare our students for their certification exams.
Saturday CTE Schedule:
  • 08:00am - 09:30am / SENIORS (12th Grade)
  • 09:30am - 11:00am / JUNIORS (11th Grade)
  • 11:00am - 12:30pm / SOPHMORES (10th Grade)

Join me as I discuss important topics related to each grade level. An email containing the link to the Town Hall will be sent to students and families separately.

Guidance Counselor Workshops on Mental Health & Wellness

Beginning this Spring Term, our Guidance Counselor team will be implementing Mindfulness sessions, Think and Talk sessions on Mondays and Fridays. Also, we will be adding workshops on varied Mental Health & wellness topics. These sessions will include peer supports. Please monitor your email(s) and visit your Cohort Google Classroom for updates.


Recorded Sessions/Workshops

Our sessions and workshops are recorded and emailed to the family and student Edison Gmail accounts ending in @taehs.org, and it will also be posted on the Cohort Google Classroom. If you're seeking a particular recording, please email us at AskEdison@taehs.org.


SAT Prep Classes

All 11th-grade students were given access to a test prep course which is self-paced called: Method Prep. Information/Access was emailed directly to students (@taehs.org Gmail account). Please reach out to your guidance counselor if you need assistance.


SAT Exam Administration

Our SAT School Day will take place on both April 13th and April 27th. On SAT School Days, the SAT will be given free of charge to all 11th graders that signed up. Invitations have been sent to students via their @taehs.org emails. The exam will begin promptly at 8:15 AM and will last approximately 4 - 5 hours. As per current state and city social distancing and health guidelines, testing rooms will not exceed capacity, and students with NO COVID-19 Testing Consent Form will NOT be allowed into the building.


SAT School Day / April 13, 2021

  • Students whose last names start with the letters A through L.
  • Any student with College Board approved circumstances.

Family Workshop by Elevate

We will be providing our families with an exclusive program designed to help our families reinforce effective remote study skills at home. The program consists of a series of 6 virtual workshops that last 50-60 minutes. The sessions will be delivered live and are open to all families. Sessions will be held every Tuesday and Thursday between 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm starting March 9, 2021. Also, we will be offering these sessions in both English and Spanish.

Toast with the Principal

I want to thank all of the families that joined me on January 7, 2021. We had a great turnout, and great questions were asked. Therefore, I have decided to hold a monthly virtual event. Moving forward, every month, I will host "Principal Parent Chat" events to continue to serve the needs of our families.


I also felt that the questions and topics covered could benefit additional parents, and I decided to start a newsletter to capture all the information in one location.

Working Papers

Students can apply for their working papers by emailing us at workingpaper@taehs.org. The process will be conducted virtually, and then upon meeting all requirements, the working papers can be mailed or picked up from the school.


Advanced Placement (AP) Exams

We are collecting AP Exam fees electronically, and families and students should have received instructions on how to make a payment. Please contact Mr. Collado, Assistant Principal of Organization at ECollad@schools.nyc.gov, with any questions.


CTE Certifications Exams

We have purchased the CTE Exams, and we will be administering them between May and June of this school year. Please contact Mr. Haripersaud, Assistant Principal of CTE at NHaripersaud@schools.nyc.gov, with any questions.


Work-Based Learning (Internships)

CLASS OF 2021 UPDATES


Graduation

Currently, we are scheduled to hold our graduation at Hofstra University on June 18th at 10:00 AM. We are aware that our in-person graduation depends on the guidance put forth by the CDC/ NYS/NYC, and we will monitor the COVID-19 protocols for social gatherings. As a precaution, we are already working on a backup plan to hold smaller in-person graduation should we have to cancel our Hofstra University location. We are also planning on holding virtual graduation for families and students that may not feel comfortable attending the in-person graduation. Families and students are welcomed to attend both graduations.


Senior Dues

We will be using our school's website to collect senior dues, and families will have an opportunity to pay for only the items they wish to purchase. (i.e., yearbook, senior apparel, graduation cap, and gown, etc.) The ordering section will be going live in April, and we will send out an announcement once it goes live.


Yearbook

We are asking for students to send in pictures highlighting their time at Edison. Also, we are still missing portrait pictures for our seniors. We ask that you please send all pictures to SBaker9@schools.nyc.gov.
