SPECIAL EDITION - 5th to 6th GRADE TRANSITION
March, 2021
Welcome to Springton Lake!
Hello, 5th Grade Families!
Spring is almost here and this means that the planning has begun to welcome your child to the Springton Lake Middle School family for the start of the 2021-2022 school year. The transition to middle school is a time of great excitement and new possibilities for the students. We also recognize that there may be some anxiety for students and parents about the change to a new, larger school complete with different faces, routines, and opportunities. Our goal over the next several months is to engage students and parents in a variety of activities designed to assist with this transition and to pave the way for a positive and enthusiastic start to the new school year.
The purpose of this communication is to provide you with an array of important information that we hope will assist you and your child with the transition. We hope that you will take some time to review this newsletter. We have also started the scheduling process and this requires information from you about your child's preferred music course. The details of this process are described below.
Our team looks forward to meeting you and your child over the coming weeks and months. If at any point during the transition process we can be of assistance to you, please feel free to reach out via email or telephone. Once again, WELCOME to the Springton Lake Family!

Save the Date - Parent Information Session
Parents and guardians are invited to join us for a virtual information session on Wednesday, April 7th at 7:00 PM. This will be an opportunity to learn more about the middle level program and to meet members of our administrative team and staff. We expect the meeting to last for about one hour. A link to attend the meeting will be provided to families via email on Tuesday, April 6th. We hope that you will be able to join us!
What's on Your Mind? Student Q & A Sessions
We hope that our 5th grade students are starting to get excited about the transition to middle school. We know that they are likely wondering about a wide range of issues...
"What happens if I get lost?”
“What’s the food like in the cafeteria?”
“How much time do I have between classes?”
“What clubs and activities are offered?”
To help answer some of these questions - and a lot more - we have scheduled a virtual gathering with the students at each school. This will also be an opportunity for us to share important information with the students, help them to feel more at ease, and to get them even more excited about coming to Springton Lake. While the dates are subject to change based upon other scheduling considerations, we are excited to meet with the students on the following dates:
Media Elementary School -------------- April 8th
Glenwood Elementary School ---------April 9th
Indian Lane Elementary School -------April 9th
Rose Tree Elementary School ---------April 30th
Music Course Selection
An important part of the scheduling process involves students and parents making selections regarding music programming for next year. Students who began learning an instrument at the elementary level will have the chance to continue with that instrument in the band or orchestra. All students also have an opportunity to participate in the choral music program. Students who do not enroll in a performance music course will be scheduled to have our Music Lab course. This link will take you to the selection form. There, you will find descriptions for each of the music courses. Once you and your child review and discuss those options, please make a selection and submit the form. We ask that you plan to submit your child’s music selection by April 9, 2021.
Student Schedules
The scheduling process for next year will be guided by data and information provided to us by your child’s current teacher, and also information provided by you and your child. Students who currently receive special education, gifted support services, or supplementary reading instruction will have similar supports in their schedules at Springton Lake. Student schedules and team assignments will be made available to students and parents in August. While schedules and information packets will be mailed home, we also invite students and families to attend our annual Schedule Release Party. The Schedule Release Party is a “block party” style event where students are able to pick up their schedules in person for “early access.” Students can enjoy complimentary food, games, music, and an opportunity to socialize with friends. While we were not able to hold this event in 2020, we hope to be able to do so in a safe manner this year. The date for this year’s Schedule Release Party will be announced in early summer.
6th Grade Transition Camp - Summer of 2021
An exciting and fun part of the summer for our incoming 6th grade students is Transition Camp. This is a voluntary, half-day program where students can meet members of the Springton Lake Staff, interact with classmates, and engage in a number of activities designed to help orient them to the school and to make them feel even more comfortable and ready for the first day of school. While we were not able to hold Transition Camp in 2020 due to COVID restrictions, we are optimistic that it will be possible to do so in 2021. Dates for Transition Camp will be published in June and shared with all families.
