· Hawk Shop Success!
· Ramping out our efforts to secure our campus
· Buses are BIG, give ‘em some room
Hawk Shop:
If you’ve wandered through the lobby recently you’ve probably noticed the Hawk Shop student store, which allows students an opportunity to redeem their Hawkeyes. Many of you probably know that Hawkeyes are handed out to students that are demonstrating safe, respectful, and/or responsible behavior. This language is part of our Positive Behavior Incentive System (PBIS) where kids earn Hawkeyes from every staff member, including our bus drivers, for doing things in the Montclair way. In order to increase the incentive, we’ve turned the Hawkeyes into a currency system and students may trade them in for specifically priced items in the student store. So far the store has been a huge success and a way for students to apply their mathematical skills.
Perimeter Gates:
In an effort to increase the level of security we offer our families/students, Montclair will begin locking the gates around the campus perimeter. We have many families that use these gates as entry points into Montclair’s campus; however, non-Montclair community members access campus through these gates as well. Unfortunately, these individuals that use our campus as a throughway do so while students are in school. This can be discerning to a young child playing on the playground, especially when our Montclair students are well versed in ‘stranger danger’ awareness. Therefore, in order to support our families, while still maintaining a secure campus while students are in session, our perimeter gates will be open for arrival, but locked shortly after school starts. Equally, gates will remain locked until shortly before dismissal. Please help us educate our community members who might feel this safety measure impairs their walking/biking habits. A shared responsibility ensures that WE are all working together.
Bus Clearance:
If you’ve driven into and out of the parking lot while our four large buses are doing the same, you know the constrictive space in which all vehicles need to share. Please leave plenty of room when entering the parking lot so that the buses can make it around the sharp corner and exit the parking lot, making room for everyone else. Thanks for working with us!
Sincerely,
Sean Leverty
Fun Run ~ October 7th
Only 9 days to go until the annual Montclair Fun Run!
Friday October 7th, every student will participate by running laps around our school track. The students will have 45 minutes to run as many laps as they can and earn a jelly bracelet for each lap! Additional prizes are listed below.
This is a wonderful way for our children to proudly support their school through the funds raised from family, friends, and neighbors.
Our goal is to raise $20,000 and 100% of the funds will be used by our PTO to fund field trips our children love and purchase PE supplies (tumble mats, balls, etc), library supplies, increase our technology offerings, and even more!
How to financially contribute:
1. Family, friends and neighbors can choose to pledge a dollar amount per lap run and afterwards submit cash or a check written to “Montclair PTO”. The student can bring their collected funds in the large, white envelope to their teacher.

International Walk + Bike to School Day – October 5
Join children and adults around the world for International Walk + Bike to School Day to celebrate the benefits of walking and biking on Wednesday, October 5, 2016.
International Walk + Bike to School Day is an annual event that promotes walking and biking. It is great for kids and it is great for the community. Why?
• More walking and biking reduces traffic congestion near schools.
• Less traffic congestion means increased community traffic safety.
• More walking and biking means increased physical activity.
• It’s FUN!
Mark your calendars and get ready to walk or bike to school on October 5, 2016. Plan now for a safe walk and bike ride to school.
International Walk to School Day is a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Over time, this event has become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration – with record breaking participation – each October. Today, thousands of schools across America – from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico – participate every October.

Hello Montclair Families!
What a great first month here at school, I hope your students are coming home with lots of exciting news about their new grade.
This year we’re really excited to offer a student store, The Hawk Shop. Students who earn Hawkeyes from staff are able to purchase items every Friday during their lunch recess. Our opening day was last Friday and it was a huge success, students and staff were thrilled to be able to participate in the shopping experience. Would you like to help with The Hawk Shop, see below on ways to help support our very first student store.
· Donate items: books, pencils, erasers, notebooks, etc
· Come volunteer to work The Hawk Shop with our 5th grade leaders during lunch recess
· Make Hawkeyes for staff during your volunteer time
I’m excited for another great year!
Ms. Duncan

Washington County Cooperative Library Services (WCCLS) Celebrates 40 years as a Cooperative!
In 1976, Washington County asked voters to approve the first countywide funding measure to support public library access for all residents. To celebrate the 40th anniversary, you can stop by the Garden Home Library to pick up a commemorative Passport to visit all the member libraries. The Passport provides an incentive to explore neighboring libraries and be inspired by the many unique experiences our public libraries offer. For participating you will be entered into a random drawing to win great prizes, including an iPad Air 2! For more information visit a local library or the WCCLS website [http://www.wccls.org/wccls40].
TAG Information
Parent Nomination Forms for TAG Testing - Every year students are considered for Talented and Gifted students in the Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). If you think your child might qualify, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form found at the following link:
Completing this form gives your child's school TAG committee more information about your child. Classroom teachers also collect observational data from students each fall and make recommendations for testing. Deadline for Parent Forms is 10/19.
