Distance Learning Announcements and Updates, July 2020
Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year!
This is a lengthy letter of communication. Please take your time and read through all this information carefully, as there is a lot to digest!
In order to answer the questions that you have about the details and in-and-outs of this year, I will be hosting a virtual informational meeting/Q&A, Monday, August 3rd. During this time I will be explaining the elementary distance learning schedules, in detail and answering questions. I will also share the process for picking up school provided chromebooks and supplies, parent and community supports being offered, and registration information.
I will send out additional detailed communication next week about the day and time for Chromebook/materials pick-up, and about our "Welcome Back" Parade scheduled for the first day of school!
I have also attached a copy of the schedule for the first two weeks of school (8/13-8/21) and the distance learning schedule that will begin August 24th We will go into greater detail about these schedules during the virtual meeting, but to help you develop your questions, here’s some information to start:
Important terms to know:
Virtual learning - anything done online
Distance Learning - anything away from brick and mortar school building (includes virtual and non-virtual)
Hybrid - some in school learning, some virtual learning
Synchronous - done live, in real time (e.g. Google meets, Zoom, or in person)
Asynchronous - done independently at your own pace and time. (e.g. - watching pre-recorded learning videos, completing assignments, pencils and paper activities, PathBlazer, etc.)
Some important things to note about the main option, Distance Learning:
The schedule for the first two weeks will look different than the normal distance learning schedule to allow for student assessment and relationship building
There will be daily synchronous (live) instruction from the classroom teacher between 8:00-11:00 every morning. Your students specific schedule will be determined by the teachers. There will be periods during this timeframe when your student is doing asynchronous work while others are meeting in small groups with the teacher.
All K through 5th grade classes will have a check-in every morning
Specialist teachers (PE, Science, Counselor SEL, and RTI) will present live lessons depending on the grade level from 11:00-3:00 on different days.
Teachers will be sharing their schedules and specific student times after the first two weeks of assessments.
Instruction will be rigorous and substantively equivalent to instruction that happens while in school.
Some important things to note about the alternative option, Castro Valley Virtual Pathway for Elementary (100% Distance Learning, full year):
The schedule the first two weeks will look different than the normal distance learning schedule to allow for student assessment and relationship building
There will be daily synchronous (live) teaching. This schedule will be determined by the teachers. Morning will be prioritized, but the scheduling has more flexibility.
All TK through 5th grade classes will have a check-in every morning
CVVPE teachers will be providing Science, Social Studies and PE lessons rather than Specialists.
Teachers will be sharing their schedules and specific student times after the first two weeks of assessments.
Instruction will be rigorous and substantially equivalent to instruction that happens while in school
