Kindergarten
We can hardly believe that we are halfway through kindergarten! Our reading and writing skills are really taking off. We are also looking forward to celebrating the 100th day of school with lots of fun games and activities. In science, we are learning about the forces of push and pull. We did an activity to help us understand how weight and distance impacts force.

2nd Grade
Second graders have been hard at work with our new Wonders curricular resource. We are currently in Unit 3, our current text set focuses on what we can see in the sky. We are focusing our instruction on helping our students to develop a deeper understanding of plot and sequencing events. Today’s lesson focuses on the paired text, Day to Night. Students from Mrs. Aguiniga’s class were reading this nonfiction story with their literacy partners. They were diving deeper into nonfiction text features, specifically how a heading can support our understanding of the text.

4th Grade
The fourth graders had an awesome opportunity this month to integrate social studies and writing from our Wonders Curriculum as we learned about Civil Rights. We began by building our background knowledge as we watched the brain pop video about Civil Rights, including information on Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks involvement in the movement. The children read from four different sources and took notes on Civil Rights. They will then be writing an argumentative paper claiming that African Americans were not treated fairly.
5th Grade
January has been the month of winter weather! With that being said though, we have had a great time getting back into the swing of things in regards to our normal schedule. Starting with our new Text-Set for Unit 3, readers have been asked to consider the essential question: What benefits come from people working as a group? This has led to some very positive and in-depth discussions about how different professionals in various industries play on their strengths for the common goal at hand.
As a grade level, we also wanted to reflect upon our special guest, Trevor Aguiniga, from Aquascapes who so generously contributed to our 5th graders’ comprehension of ecosystems back in December. Students were appreciative of the expertise and aquatic animals that were brought to show. We are eager to build the in-class Aquagarden ecosystem within our classrooms that he graciously left with us to build.
