ELA News and Updates

In ELA this week,we continued reading Freak the Mighty. We are on Ch. 10 and the students are really enjoying it, so far. They have comprehension questions that go along with the book. These questions should be worked on while they are reading. Ch. 1-11 questions are due next Friday!
They finished spelling-Unit 5 this week, dealing with the short and long “u” sounds. Pretests are given on Monday and tests are on Fridays.
We starting going over verbs this week. Ask them to sing you the verb song. They sure have some sweet dance moves.
I also introduced their new writing piece, a descriptive Halloween story. They seem very eager to get started on this. These will be due on Nov. 1st. I cannot wait to read all of them.
Have a great weekend!

Math News and Updates
Amanda Lois amanda.lois@yorkville.k12.wi.us
This week in Math, the sixth graders were busy working with rational numbers. First they learned how to classify them (fractions, decimals, integers, and whole numbers). Next they found the opposites and absolute value of fraction and decimals. Then they finished off the module by converting positive and negative fractions into decimals and then comparing them least to greatest or greatest to least. They ended the week with the Module 3 Quiz.
Next week, we will review and take the Unit 1 test. Then we begin Module 4: Fraction Operations. Fractions are an essential skill by the end of sixth grade. We will review adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions as well as solving story problems involving fractions.
Have a great weekend!

Sixth grade social studies continued working with early explorers. We wrapped up the section with Christopher Columbus, Vasco de Gama, Amerigo Vespucci, and Ferdinand Magellan.
We began with chapter 1 where we looked at the qualities that define a civilization. We also spent time investigating some of the Ancient civilizations of North America, including the Olmec, Mayan, Incan, and Aztec civilizations.
Chapter 2 introduces the early explorers. We are looking the the voyages of Dias, De Gama, Columbus, Vespucci, and Cabral. We will continue chapter 2 next week we will continue to look at Spain in America and the competition for colonies. We read about conquistadors and their relationship with Spanish kings and queens. They learned about Ponce de Leon and his search for not only gold but the fountain of youth. We will continue our work with Spanish settlements in the Americas.
Please check skyward for updated grades and to check for absent or late work. Please let the office know if you are having trouble accessing Skyward. They will be able to assist you. Have a great weekend!
