Principal's Office
Here is our Roadrunner Weekly for the week of May 25th through May 30th. Happy Memorial Day, everyone! It's a time to remember and give thanks to those brave men and women who have given their lives to protect ours. And during these unique times, we also want to thank first responders and medical personnel who are on the front lines of this pandemic helping to keep us all safe...we thank you all for your service to our country!
he school district has established the following instructional timeline to close out the school year:
- Friday, May 22, 2020 – Last day for teachers to assign classwork
- Friday, May 29, 2020 – Last day for students to complete work and turn in Chromebooks
- Friday, June 5, 2020 – Last day of school and last day teachers are available
As for student personal items, spring pictures, and Starstruck DVD's, this Friday, May 29th, from 9:00-3:00, is our last scheduled day to pick up those items and turn in Chromebooks, student work, or other items that are property of the school. Please let us know if you are not available that day and need to make special arrangements.
The next few sections below also contain information from our superintendent and other important updates and links to websites and resources for easier access, so please read through them all. Lastly, please check out our staff websites as I have asked teachers to continue to update them with relevant information throughout our time away from school.
Stay healthy and safe, and remember to feel free to email your teachers and myself directly if you have any further questions or need support or help in any way!

Updates from Mr. Leaman - Superintendent
Memorial Day
Monday is Memorial Day and the district office phones will be closed. I want to thank all those that are serving and have served our country through the military. I was recently reminded of the words, “All gave some, some gave all.” To those that gave all, we can’t thank enough.
Opening of Schools
The CDC recently released guidelines regarding school openings. They include many options and recommendations including the wearing of masks and student day models. I want you to know we will follow the health guidelines in place when schools open on August 20, 2020, but these guidelines may change drastically between now and then. We currently have teachers working on a variety of learning formats of the school day. In a perfect world, we would use the same format we always have, but we need to prepared with options. Based on our survey, we also know some families will choose a full-time home, or hybrid experience and we are preparing options for that too. Long story short, we are going to continue to monitor the situation throughout the summer and be prepared to respond with options based on the guidelines in place at the time. Our goal is to have options for parents to choose a program that fits their needs.
Budget
Many saw the recent article in the New Messenger that the district needs to reduce its budget. We are very fortunate we are in better shape than most districts. We will continue to provide a quality program to your children with the budget available to us. Some have asked if the budget reductions are affecting our building program and the good news is they are not!
Graduation
I can’t say sorry enough to our graduating class for the impact the health situation is having on their senior year. High school graduation is a rite of passage that we all go through which is full of memories. I wanted to clarify our graduation offerings as some have stated we are not going to have a physical graduation even if the public health offices allow it. The school has offered a variety of activities of which all are aware. We will have a ceremony during the summer if health officials allow it. You should know our insurance will not cover any activity that is not within health guidelines. We are going to continue to monitor the situation and hope a ceremony will fall within health guidelines sometime this summer. If we get a green light we will have a ceremony!
Medication Pick Up
Another Opportunity to Pick-Up Student Medication - Thursday, June 4 from 10:00 - 2:00
The district nurses will be in the Health Services Office located in the ECAT portable on the north end of the parking lot at Lincoln High School from 10:00 - 2:00 on Thursday, June 4 for medication pick up. Any families who had meds at a school site may pick them up during this time. All meds not picked up will be properly disposed of after June 4.
If you need to make alternate arrangements to pick up your meds or have any other health services related needs, you can email our nurses Kelley Gordan kgordon@wpusd.org or Madi Schumann mschumann@wpusd.org
Celebrating Our 5th Graders!
We have another leftover instructional materials pick-up scheduled for this coming Tuesday, May 19th, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Please stop by and pick-up your blank sign if you have not done so already. Completed lawn signs can also be returned on May 19th as well.
We are also working on some other ideas, so stay tuned! Feel free to email me or your 5th grade teacher if you have questions, comments, or suggestions.
Update on Loaner Chromebooks & Tech Support
From the District Office & Tech Dept.:
New Loans
As of Friday, May 1, 2090, we are no longer loaning Chromebooks. We have completed three distributions and loaned many more on an informal basis.
Chromebook Damage
You have two choices should your loaned Chromebook break:
- You can pay $350.00 and immediately receive another loaned Chromebook
- Call our district office (916.645.6350) or email kcallahan@wpusd.org to arrange a drop off the Chromebook. Our tech department will assess the amount to repair the device. Once you pay for the repair, you will be loaned another Chromebook.
Return
We will be returning Chromebooks as part of the checkout this year on Friday, May 29th. We will refresh the devices and get them ready for either use at home or relocating them back to the classroom they were used in.
If you are having a problem with technology from home, the tech department can help! Just follow one of the these links from any computer and they will assist:

Meals for Students - Tuesday, May 26th
From the District Office & Food Service Dept.:
PLEASE HAVE ROOM IN YOUR CAR TRUNK OR REAR OF YOUR SUV FOR THE FOOD. THIS WILL HELP US MAINTAIN SOCIAL DISTANCING AND KEEP OUR WORKERS AND YOU SAFE.
We are set for food distribution on Tuesday, May 26th, 2020, starting at 10:30 at four locations. We are preparing 14,000 meals serving 1,400 students. We had adequate food for our last distribution so we are hoping to do the same next week.
Here are the details (please read all of the bullets):
- We will provide meals (breakfast and lunch) to all WPUSD area students who are 18 years of age or younger.
- Both breakfast and lunch meals (cold packs) can be picked up at the locations below
(McBean Park, Lincoln High School, Glen Edwards Middle School, & Sheridan Elementary)
- Each student will receive 5 breakfasts and 5 lunches
- The distribution will begin at 10:30 with a late 4:30 PM pick-up at GEMS.
- There is no charge for the food and you do not need to qualify as low income to receive the meals. All our students are welcome.
- An equal amount of food is at each location, pick the one most convenient to you
- Students must be present to receive food
- Please follow the directions of personnel on site so we can maintain social distancing. All personnel will be wearing masks and gloves based on the recent Placer County Health recommendation.
- There is no onsite eating allowed.
- Please remember some of the meals you will receive, contain items that must be refrigerated within two hours of receiving them. Leaving food out too long at room temperature can cause bacteria to grow and therefore will be unsafe to consume.
* The Placer County Food Bank is active in Lincoln and I have attached their flyer at the end of this email."

Retrieving Items – Many families are calling to retrieve items that were left behind when we closed schools. With the current Shelter in Placer order, individuals are not allowed to go in and retrieve items. We will do this before the end of the school year on June 5, 2020.
Graduation/Promotion – Our middle schools are planning a commemoration for 8th grade promotion and the high schools are looking at many options to celebrate our 12th grade graduates. 5th grade activities will be coordinated by individual school sites, so be on the lookout for info from your site principal and/or 5th grade teacher. More on this soon."

5th Grade Puberty Education
FSS 5th grade families,
One of the things we normally cover in 5th grade is puberty education. Specially designed for 5th grade girls and boys, the Always Changing & Growing Up Puberty Education Program offers resources to help educators and parents teach the important topics of puberty and development.
Typically, this would be something we could cover with your kids at the end of 5th grade (with your permission). This year, however, due to our school closure, we will need to share our resources with you and let you decide how you would like to share them with your 5th grade student. Attached below are the following:
- Parent Permission Letter
- Teacher Instructional Guide
- Teacher Presentation
Click the following links to view the videos:
- "Always Changing and Growing Up | Girls Puberty Education Video"
- "Always Changing and Growing Up | Boys Puberty Education Video"
Additional resources can be found by clicking this link and visiting the P&G School Programs site itself. If you have any questions, feel free to email your 5th grade teachers and/or me, and we'll be glad to help in any way we can.
District Office Update on Grading During School Closures
From Kerry Callahan - Deputy Superintendent of Educational Services
End of the Year Instructional Timeline
Now that it is May, we have established a instruction timeline for the rest of the year. We will use following dates to close out the school year:
- Friday, May 22, 2020 – Last day for teachers to assign classwork
- Friday, May 29, 2020 – Last day for students to complete and turn in work
- Friday, June 5, 2020 – Last day of school and last day teachers are available
Access to Instructional Links
One of the main questions we receive is where to go to find links for the various school learning tools and resources available. Click here to go to the "Homework Help" link. It can also be found under "Students" on our First St. School website.
From there, you can also access the Clever link which I've attached here directly. This is the site where kids can log in with their badges if they use them or with their district email and student ID number (if you need help finding either, please email me or your student's teacher). iReady and other instructional sites and resources can be accessed here.
Another important location to check frequently is the teacher websites themselves which can be found by clicking here. Teachers will be updating these throughout the week(s), so check back once or twice a week to stay current on classroom, school, and district updates.
And lastly, If you are looking for additional educational websites to help your child learn from home, here is a list taken from an article posted on Swing Education (20 Online Learning Resources to Get You through Coronavirus School Closures). Here's the link to the article: https://swingeducation.com/resources/20-online-learning-resources-to-help-you-get-through-coronavirus-school-closures/ Many, if not all, of the websites are offering FREE online learning opportunities for students, so it's worth exploring them with your children.
