News from Music
Music Newsletter:
With the 2017-2018 McBride’s Got Talent showcase now completed, we are buckling down for testing music skills in class. Here are the concepts that each grade will be tested on for quarter 4:
K-1- Matching pitch, counting ta, ti-ti, and sh, percussion technique, and differentiating between beat, rhythm, and ostinato
2nd Grade: Reading, playing, and singing simple rhythms and melodies, playing an ostinato on unpitched percussion alone and in small groups
3rd Grade: Playing “B”, “A”, “G”, “E”, and “D” on recorder, reading sheet music
4th-5th Grades: Treble/bass clef note names and note values, C position on piano with both hands, playing a melody in the right hand
6th Grade: Same as 4th and 5th, as well as guitar technique (end of May)
Also, it’s not too late to sign up for choir next year! If your student missed choir auditions and is in grades 3-6 next year, have your student take home a choir packet and they may audition at 2pm in the music room at the end of the day. We have had a lot of interest in choir next year, so we may split it into two groups- more information to come. In addition, 5th grade students will get to see the HS band perform at the high school on May 21st during the school day. Mrs. Freshner wants all 5th and 6th graders to know that she’d love to have you sign up! 6th graders are also encouraged to join choir at the middle school, Mr. Stearns is very excited to have new faces in choir next year.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call, email, or stop by!

****In the morning there is no supervision before 7:25 a.m. so please do not drop off your students before then. We want all of our students to be safe!
****The playground is only to be used after 2:45 p.m (1:15 on Wednesdays).
Thank you for your cooperation!
From the library.......
Library Dates to Note
May 5 - 25 Book Fair Open Online
May 14 – 18 Book Fair Open in Library
May 25 – Last Day of Library Check Out
June 1 – All Library Books Due
It was asked if we would be having a Buy One, Get One Book Fair this spring.
Buy One, Get One Book Fair is a nice way for school libraries to give back to the community. The school, rather than Scholastic, is actually the one giving the free book. It comes from the fundraising money earned by the book fair. So, at the end of the Buy One, Get One Book Fair, the school earns $0.00.
This year the McBride Library is giving a gift certificate of $2 to each student, rather than a matching of funds, for funds spent. It is a little different from what has been done some years in the past. It is not to say that one way is better than the other. We would like to give back to the community in a different way for this spring fair.
Safety Patrol
FOR NEXT YEAR - WE'RE LOOKING FOR SAFETY PATROL - CROSSING GUARD MEMBERS.
For the month of May, we will be accepting applications from current 4th and 5th graders who would like to be on Safety Patrol next year. This is a great way for students to give back and serve our McBride Community. Applications were sent home last week, and extras are available in the office.
Art Literacy
This last round of Art Lit lessons were from Van Gogh. He's known to have said, "Great things are done by a series of small things brought together." Kati Crouch brought this forward and she said it best.... "This is a Mustang quote if we've ever heard one." This can be our motto sentence after our theme TOGETHER.
TOGETHER.... Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.

Children's Mental Health Awareness Day - May 10th
May 10th is Children's Mental Health Awareness Day. To bring awareness to the importance of Children's Mental Health, Columbia Community Mental Health will be hosting an open house at our children's only facility, CCMH the Kid's Haven. The event will take place on May 10th from 5-7 pm. Community partners and families are invited. Some of the children's therapists from CCMH and GOBHI-WRAP will be at the Kid's Haven so community members can ask questions and become more comfortable with the importance of children's mental health. We will also provide snacks and offer tours of the facility. I've attached the flier below.

TOGETHER - Mustang Award
Our Mustang theme this year is "Together". Let's continue the recognition and thank yous. Each week we've enjoyed sharing the recipients for the TOGETHER award. Recipients receive this award because of the spirit of togetherness they've demonstrated to help McBride continue to be strong. You may nominate staff from McBride, staff from St. Helens School District, parents from McBride, community members from McBride/St. Helens - anyone that demonstrates working 'together' to help McBride continue to be the incredible school and community that it is. You may pick up a "Together" nomination form in the office or email Mrs. Tyler (lisat@sthelens.k12.or.us).
This week's award recipients......
Sheri Lee - Sheri Lee is a Special Education Teacher at McBride who went out of her way to stop by a school in Hillsboro to pick up some lost keys for a colleague. This saved an extra trip!
C-Pod Teachers - This team of teachers in C Pod have been nominated because of their significant supportive "Force" for new staff, encouraging throughout the school year. This kind of support teachers in Pod C provide is nothing less than exemplary - Humor included!!! The gratitude for these colleagues is tremendous.
Ted Hirning - Kelli Warren - Kim Snook - These sixth grade teachers took our sixth graders to Camp Cedar Ridge for Outdoor School. It is a commitment to do this and it's a fabulous opportunity for our students. Thank you, teachers, for your willingness to attend Outdoor School with your students.
Ian Hunt - (McBride Math Teacher - Gr. 3, 4, 6) Mr. Hunt was very flexible to take the place of another colleague who was absent for two days when there was no substitute to fill the position. Thank you, Mr. Hunt!
