Information for Parents
Volunteers
We are excited to share that we are once again able to host volunteers at SMS. All volunteers must complete a background check and show proof of vaccination. If you are interested, please contact Stacy Holloway at sholloway@sherwood.k12.or.us to identify a time or times to join us. We have identified three areas where volunteer support would be greatly appreciated:
- Crossing Guards: Helping with the flow of traffic and protecting pedestrians. We have more crosswalks than available people. Stop signs and hi-vis gear will be provided. We will have two times for this: 8:00 - 8:30 and 3:15 - 3:45 (2:15 - 2:45 on Wednesday Early Release days).
- Lunch and Recess Supervision: We have multiple areas open to students at lunch and recess. Our lunchroom is an active place and we always appreciate having extra adults helping students remain safe, responsible, and respectful at lunch. Additionally, with sunny days returning and students spreading out more at recess, we’d be happy to have volunteers helping with recess. Times for this option will be 10:50 - 11:30, 11:50 - 12:30, and 12:45 - 1:25 except on Wednesdays due to the Early Release schedule. Please contact the school office if you are interested in volunteering in this area on Wednesdays.
- Hallway Monitors: There are a lot of bodies in our hallways and students sometimes need support in getting to class in a timely manner, respecting each other’s personal spaces, and following expected behaviors for hallways. When classes are in session, it is helpful to have adults in the hallways in case any students are in need of help or to have adults spend time near our restrooms to deter vandalism. If you are interested in helping with this, we have many times available throughout the day in hour-long increments, 8:15 - 9:15, 9:15 - 10:15, 10:15 - 11:15, 11:15 - 12:15, 12:15 - 1:15, 1:15 - 2:15, 2:15 - 3:15. On Wednesdays monitoring will end at 2:15 p.m. due to the Early Release schedule.
Outdoor School
Sixth grade students will attend NWRESD’s Outdoor Science School on Monday & Tuesday of next week, May 9th and May 10th. Students will travel to one of three designated locations on Monday and a second location on Tuesday. Departure time from SMS is 9:00 a.m. with buses returning to SMS in time for regular dismissal. Please send your student with a sack lunch and snack. Students will be outside rain or shine and should dress appropriately. Face masks are optional. See the linked Information Sheet (English) (Spanish) for more information regarding what to bring.
If you have a sixth grade student attending ODS, please review the lunch protocols and NWRESD’s discipline system shared below.
For 6th grade students not attending Outdoor School students will participate in guided science related activities at SMS.
State Testing & Opt Out Information
8th Grade Science - May 9, 2022: 8th grade science will begin testing on May 9th. You must adhere to the following state guidelines and submit your request prior to 8:30 a.m. on May 9th. Requests will not be honored after that time.
State requirement for Science testing:
“For all other required statewide assessments (OSAS Online Science, ELPA Screener, ELPA Summative, and the ORExt Science Assessment), parents may request that their student be exempted from state testing based on either disability or religion. OAR 581-021-0009: Exemptions allows school districts to excuse students from a state required program or learning activity, including state testing, to accommodate a student’s disabilities or religious beliefs. In order for a school district to excuse a student from testing under this rule, the student’s parent must submit a written request to the school district, listing the reasons for the request and proposing an alternative individualized learning activity for the student that meets the same goals that would be accomplished by participation in state testing. Appropriate school personnel must evaluate and approve the parent request.”
ELA SBAC Testing – May 16, 2022: ELA SBAC testing will begin on May 16. If you would like to excuse your student from this testing, you must complete the Opt-Out Form and return it to Allison Kopp prior to 8:30 a.m. on May 16th. Requests will not be honored after this time.
A portion of the testing during the week includes using headphones or earbuds. Your student may bring his or her own wired headphones for this section of the test. Wireless headphones and earbuds are not allowed.
Student Restrooms: There have been ongoing concerns around graffiti in the SMS restrooms. Writing and drawing done with paint pens is especially problematic to remove. We ask that parents not allow students to bring paint pens to school in order to minimize damage.
