Message from our Principal
Kia ora koutou,
It was fabulous to have our first full week back at school last week. I’ve enjoyed visiting classes during this time and it’s fantastic to see that nearly everyone is back in school. Our students have settled really quickly and are working hard. It was lovely to see the outstanding learning our year 2 students in room 5 shared with us during our whole school zoom assembly yesterday. They creatively presented a Room 5 Rap on the classroom rules, simple sentences they had written about ice cream, and Lego people art work which links into their classroom learning environment. We all enjoyed the learning celebration online.
Our community survey last year highlighted our families would like further communication sent home on the learning that is happening in classrooms to enable them to have learning conversations at home with students as well as support them in these areas with home learning. As a result of this, all our team leaders have sent out a team newsletter outlining this terms learning foci in our curriculum areas.
To follow on from this, a focus in all our classrooms has been The Pinehill Way which sets the scene for the year on our learning, how we treat each other, ourselves and our environment. We have also had a strong school wide focus on The Resilience project which will be taught throughout the year.
The Resilience Project is a schoolwide programme from Year 0 to 6 that provides practical, evidence-based, positive mental health strategies to build resilience and happiness. The programme focuses on three key pillars that have been proven to cultivate positive emotion; Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness (GEM). The programme also has a strong focus on Connection, Purpose, Kindness, Emotional Literacy and Physical Health. As part of the programme Year 3-6 children receive a journal that they will use in their weekly lessons.
Why are we doing The Resilience Project at Pinehill School?
* Mental health conditions amongst Kiwi youth have doubled in the past decade, and could get worse in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
* New Zealand is in the top 10 of the most medicated countries in the world for anxiety.
* Suicide rates in New Zealand are among the highest in the world.
* Recent research puts New Zealanders in the top 6 for the loneliest people in the world.

Unfortunately under Red Light settings we are unable to proceed with our Pinehill School Picnic which was scheduled for next week. Our picnic has been a great way for families to meet each other, their child’s teacher and their child’s friends. It’s a great way to build relationships and make connections as we begin the year.
Instead of having a picnic as we know it, we will be having a ‘Meet my Teacher and Classmates’ online day. We appreciate that most of you have not walked through the school gates this year, met your child's teacher or set foot in their classroom/learning environment.
The purpose of our ‘Meet my Teacher and Classmates’ online day is for you to be able to zoom in from home or work and meet your child’s teacher online as well as see your child in their classroom environment. Students will be sharing their classroom with you through the screen. This will not be a zoom meeting to discuss your child’s individual learning. Learning conversation meetings are scheduled in week 10, towards the end of the term.
Meet my Teacher and Classmates online day will take place next week on Thursday 3rd March. Your child’s teacher will send you a zoom link. The zoom meetings will be staggered by year level, so that if you have more than one child at our school you have the opportunity to attend all meetings. Further information on times will come home soon. We hope to see you online next Thursday!

The Resilience Project
Part 1: Introducing The Resilience Project – Parent and Carer video series.
Pinehill started our 'The Resilience Project' journey in 2021.
The Resilience Project delivers emotionally engaging programs and provides evidence-based, practical strategies to build resilience.
The Digital Programme consists of online presentations and lessons for students, professional development for staff, and a video series for our parent and carer community.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing the Parent and Carer Programme with you. The videos are 5-10 minutes long and will walk through the key pillars of resilience: Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness. You’ll hear stories and be introduced to activities to show how these strategies can support our kids' learning and development, and also support you as parents and carers.
This programme is an important part of our school’s effort to look after the mental health of our community.

We will be in touch regularly to share the remainder of the programme, including research and wellbeing activities to integrate into day to day life. We will also share examples of The Resilience Project in action in our classrooms so you are part of the journey too.
Writing at Pinehill School
As part of our professional development, teachers are using Writers Tool Box (or formally known as Write that Essay) to further develop their writing programmes. Your children may have talked to you about sentence types or their ‘quick write’ sessions in class. The Year 4-6 children will be able to access this programme online both at home and at school. On Monday, Constable Wansink came to run another practical road patrol session with our new Year 6 road patrollers. During the last training session, the weather was not in our favour, and it was difficult for the children to practise their skills in the pouring rain. Luckily Monday was a beautiful, sunny day and all the children got to have an extended practice.

Basketball and Splash Polo
Thank you for expressing an interest in winter netball 2022.
Netball is open to all children from years 2-6. Games are played at Pinehurst school on Saturday mornings through Kidzplay netball.
Fees for the season are approximately $55, Umpire fees are additional. Children will need to wear the Pinehill school red sports T Shirt and a black skirt and netball shoes.
Once the expression of interest has closed off, we will start to organise the teams, if required we will hold a trial to place children in teams. Every effort will be made to place your child in a team, however due to the number of children interested this may not be possible.
Once this process has been completed we will notify parents via email, inviting you to REGISTER and pay through Kindo.
*Teams will only be confirmed to go ahead if we have enough children and parent volunteers for the coach and manager positions, and fees are paid in full.*

Friends of Pinehill School - FOPS
Friends of Pinehill School would like to welcome all students and parents back to Pinehill School for 2022.
Fun Food Friday and Snack Food Friday are suspended this term. We thank you for your patience and understanding.
You can purchase second hand school uniforms at our Kindo Online Shop, please visit https://shop.tgcl.co.nz/shop/index.html. Uniform orders will be delivered to your child’s classroom. If you select “collect from the office”, this can be arranged and items can be collected on Fridays from the school office. As a result of limited access to school grounds, please allow extra time for order fulfillment. If you need assistance please feel free to email us.
Due to technical issues, some orders from last week were not delivered on time. We apologize for any inconvenience caused and if you still have outstanding orders, please email us. Thank you for your cooperation.
If you have school uniforms that you can donate, please ask your child to bring them to school and pass them to the office. Thank you for your generosity!

We are collecting “Yummy” stickers from apples, nectarines, peaches and pears, and barcodes from bags of “Yummy” fruit. This is a year-long promotion. The stickers are exchanged for sports equipment for the school. All stickers and barcodes need to be stuck on the official forms which can be downloaded from www.yummyfruit.co.nz or from the FOPS fundraising page on the school website. Please keep complete forms at home. We will let you know when you can return them to the school. Thank you for your ongoing effort!

FOPS is a fundraising and support network of parents and teachers assisting Pinehill School to connect our community. It is a great way to get involved and meet other fun enthusiastic parents. Each member brings something unique and special to our group. Kia ora rawa atu thank you!
The FOPS AGM was at 8.30am on Monday 14th February. We welcomed our new Secretary and teacher representative Wendy Chatterton. Thank you Wendy and hopefully we will be able to meet in person soon. Financials and budget for this year will be announced on the FOPS webpage at a later date. A reminder that it is compulsory for all students to wear a hat at break times in Terms 1 & 4. Any sun hat is ok, or you can purchase a school hat from Janbells in Mairangi Bay.
Please remember to update your alert groups for this year. Select your child’s relevant year level, classroom and sports groups if they are registered to play that sport for this year.
