THREE TYPES OF ROCKS
Igneous Rocks
- Igneous rocks are formed either inside or outside the volcano
- The main types of Igneous rocks are intrusive and extrusive. Intrusive = formed inside the volcano. Extrusive = formed outside the volcano.
Sedimentary Rocks
- Sedimentary rocks are formed in the Earths surface
- The main types of Sedimentary rocks are Clastic, Bioclastic, and chemically formed. Clastic = formed by many sediments cemented together. Bioclastic = formed by shells and plant materials. Crystalline = formed by chemicals in the ocean water.
Metamorphic Rocks
- Metamorphic rocks are found deep below the Earth.
- The main type of Metamorphic rocks are Foliated and Non-Foliated. Foliated = alignment of minerals in a metamorphic rock.
Basalt
- Basalt has a fine texture and its size is less than 1 mm
- Vesicular
- Dark color
- High Density
- Mafic
Rock Salt
- Crystalline texture and fine crystals
- The composition is Halite
- Crystals from chemical precipitates and evaporites
Hornfels
- Fine grain size
- The composition is Varioius minerals
- Type of metamorphism is Contact
- Various rocks changed by heat from nearby magma/lava
