May Unit: I Look Like My Parents

In this unit, we will explore how traits are inherited from parents. Students will learn about DNA and how different traits are inherited in people, animals, and plants.

Chapter 1- Living Things and Cells

Chapter 2- DNA and Genes

Chapter 3- DNA in People

Chapter 4- Todd's Family Tree

Chapter 5- DNA in Animals

Chapter 6- DNA in Plants

The life skills applications in this unit continue the theme of learning about DNA and living things. Students will practice their grooming and hygiene habits by completing the personal grooming task of cleaning their teeth to keep their body and cells healthy. Students will practice making decisions about the rights and responsibilities of going to a movie. They will make their own family tree, like Todd does in the chapter book, and will practice discussing their family with others. Students will practice time management skills by reading and answering questions from a pet schedule for a dog named Scout. They will also learn about proper food storage and apply their problem-solving skills by storing foods in the correct place to keep them fresh and safe to eat.

At the end of the month, we have a fun activity called Creature Creations. Students will make a creature to show how traits are inherited from parents. It is always so fun to see everyone's little creatures with all the different traits. Students will be able to show and share their creatures in our class video chat during the last week of school!
