What makes a successful online teacher?

I think a successful online instructor needs a sense of humor, mostly..followed by deep content knowledge and technological expertise. One challenge for an online instructor is to have students see you as real and not a robot!

What are some tips that you use for student success?

I think the biggest tip I have for student success is to always begin with the positive side of things in feedback on assignments, announcements, and communication. In other words, you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. If you call a parent regarding a problem with a student I find it is more effective to start by praising something the student has done before discussing the problem. I try to start with a positive in my student feedback--sometimes it might be a stretch..but if you don't start positively you can lose their attention and they won't be receptive to constructive criticism.
