Meet the Principal
Ms. Judith Wherritt
Hello East Albemarle Families & Community Members!
Over the past two years, East Albemarle students and staff have shown tremendous growth under the leadership of Dr. Erik Johnson. His transition to Central Elementary as principal has left me with very big shoes to fill as he was an excellent teacher, leader, mentor, and source of support for everyone with whom he crossed paths. The students and staff at Central are fortunate to be welcoming an amazing leader to their family. It is my goal to continue with the systems and processes that have been implemented to maintain the momentum we have going and achieve exponential growth during the 2021-2022 school year and beyond!
One major aspect of growing as a school family is building relationships and making connections with one another. I would like to take this opportunity to share a little about myself. I was born and raised in the small town of Cleveland, North Carolina located in Rowan County, about an hour northwest of Albemarle. My dad was a cabinetmaking teacher before his retirement. My mom was a materials clerk at a local manufacturing plant before joining the school system as an instructional assistant and bus driver. They are both very hard workers who instilled that quality in me. I attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where I earned my Bachelor's in Elementary Education and taught for Charlotte-Mecklenburg and Kannapolis City Schools. During my time in Kannapolis, I earned my Master's in School Leadership from Gardner-Webb University. I served as an instructional coach before becoming an assistant principal. In 2019, I relocated (professionally) to East Albemarle Elementary.
Outside of school, I enjoy working on home improvement projects. About a year ago, I moved to a new house in Kannapolis and have since loved working in my yard, decorating, and organizing the new space. I also LOVE spending time reading and working on my front porch swing in the sunshine! I enjoy running and spend quite a bit of time on the weekends teaching English to Chinese students through an online organization called VIPKid. Artistic/creative projects have always interested me and recently I have discovered a love for outdoor, painted murals. I have convinced my family and friends to join in on my mural hunting adventures for the experience of interesting destinations and fun photos. My family and friends mean the world to me as they have taught me the importance of cultivating lasting relationships, hard work, and finding those things in life I am passionate about and pursuing my goals wholeheartedly.
I can honestly say I am passionate about my work with children, specifically those in the East Albemarle community. I absolutely LOVE East Albemarle and am certain I serve the BEST students, families, and staff. I am fully committed to doing whatever it takes to ensure East students are successful and families and staff feel supported. I firmly believe strong relationships, quality instruction, and an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement will lead East students to flourish and grow exponentially, much like a flower. Flowers are beautiful, but beauty is cultivated over time and requires just the right amount of resources to grow to its full potential. I am confident our students and teachers will flourish this year as we come together as a school community to identify and support students' needs, deliver high-quality, rigorous instruction, regularly reflect upon the progress made, and look for opportunities for improvement.
I hope you will feel welcome at East, become connected to myself and your child's teacher, and be invested in their education. A collective commitment to your child's success will give them the resources they need to flourish this school year!
* you are WELCOME at East *
Thank you for allowing me and the East Staff the opportunity to serve your child this year!
