Message From The Principal
Good Afternoon!
I hope the opening weeks of semester 2 have been going well for all of you!
Pressing Forward in the New Year
I like the time around the New Year—it’s always one that gets me thinking about fresh starts and focusing on what’s ahead.
For some of us it’s easy to let past burdens weigh us down…and sometimes those burdens get in the way of really drilling down on the things we need to do right now! In school, the things that we need to do right now mean focusing on our studies, getting assignments completed, or (if you’re a senior) planning for “what’s next” after graduation.
My message for myself (and anyone to whom this may apply): let’s shake off the things we can’t control and all the unnecessary things that get in the way of us working towards what we really want! And, as always, it’s a powerful thing to share our goals with other people that we trust. Just saying out loud what our goals are and what the obstacles are (and plans to overcome them) is a big help in us achieving our goals!!
Of course, all of that is easier said than done—but it is good to think about and to be reminded of! Students: If you need help in getting focused and shaking off things that don’t help you move forward in 2nd Semester—please see our Counselor, Ms. Rice, our Social Worker, Ms. Gina Siez, or any other trusted adult here on campus (like your Coach)!
Credit Recovery
One big goal for us in Semester 2 is to have students take full advantage of their Credit Recovery class. As you may recall, this is a period that almost all students have every day. During this period students have the opportunity to work online to retake courses that they have previously failed. I have to admit, it's not the most fun activity that I can I think of...but it does solve a fundamental problem: how do I make up a lot of credits so that I can graduate on time? We calculate that students should be able to "make up" (complete) about 2-3 (online) classes per semester during their Credit Recovery class time.
Students really wanting to complete more courses ARE CERTAINLY ENCOURAGED TO DO SO! Students can work on their make up courses at home, at night and on the weekends! The only thing that they can't do is take "end of unit tests" at home (those need to be supervised here at school).
Now that we're headed towards graduation on Friday, June 9, 2023, it's clearly a necessity that all students (and especially seniors) spend this credit recovery period wisely.
To help students focus our Credit Recovery Team has come up with a "contract"--some agreements that we need to have in place so that students make the most of their time during THAT CLASS PERIOD! Check out the contract below. If you have an opportunity to speak with your daughter/son about school it's always a good idea to ask about their progress in "Credit Recovery". Have them log in and show you the "percent of progress" that they're making on a given class! For a good number of seniors, full engagement with credit recovery and completing courses that they've previously failed will mean the difference between graduating in June--or not! And, OF COURSE, we want all of our students to graduate on time!!
Have a great week--and let us know how we can help if you have any concerns!
Sincerely,
David Schlottman

Teenage years are a critical time when guys and girls make choices that affect the rest of their lives. The empowerment groups provide a safe place where teens can talk about what is really going on in their lives, and a community of mentors and peers who listen, believe in them and help them make better choices. This approach gives teens permission to tell the truth about the challenges all teens face, make their own decisions on how to deal with those challenges, and begin to take responsibility for their choices and the consequences of their actions. It also provided tools needed to navigate through the teen years and transition positively into adulthood.
