30 GT Clock Hours
Summer 2020
What is the 30 Clock Hours?
Prior to assignment in the program, teachers who provide instruction and services that are a part of the program for gifted students have a minimum of thirty (30) clock hours of staff development that includes nature and needs of gifted/talented students, assessing student needs, and curriculum and instruction for gifted students. (19 TAC 89.2(2))
The 30 Hours is composed of 5 strands, which are:
- Nature & Needs
- Identification
- Differentiation
- Creativity & Critical Thinking Strategies
- Depth & Complexity

Registration in Edugence is now open. Click on the course links listed below and then register for the session you wish to attend.
Please bring a charged laptop or tablet each day.
Each day will begin at 8:30 and end at 4:30 unless otherwise noted in Edugence.
Secondary Teachers
Secondary teachers who attend an APSI or NMSI have earned 12 of the 30 hours. The strands that are covered by an APSI/NMSI are the differentiation strand and the creativity/critical thinking strand. Please register for Nature & Needs, Identification, and Depth & Complexity.
Nature & Needs of Gifted Learners
Objectives:
- Know basic terminology, current definitions, theories, and models of giftedness.
- Identifies characteristics and their effects on academic and social settings.
- Identifies characteristics of special groups of gifted and talented students, such as lower-income, handicapped, black, Hispanic, and limited-English proficient. Understands the implications of these groups’ characteristics on programs for the gifted and talented.
- Creates an environment in which gifted and talented students feel challenged and safe to explore and express their uniqueness.

Identification/Assessment for Gifted Learners
Objectives:
- Uses broad-based, multi-faceted identification procedures, including varied sources of information and qualitative and quantitative measures that match specific areas of ability.
- Interprets assessment results from both qualitative and quantitative measure to other professionals and parents for their use in determining placement and in planning specific program activities for each gifted and talented student.
- Understands the characteristics of special groups of gifted and talented students such as lower-income, handicapped, black, Hispanic, and limited-English proficient. Understand how to provide equal access to programs for gifted and talented students.
This is a blended class. These sessions will meet via Zoom as well as have online assignments. Details will be emailed to registrants.

Creative & Critical Instructional Strategies
Objectives:
- Understands the characteristics of gifted and talented students and the influence of these characteristics on instructional strategies used in classrooms for the gifted and talented.
- Designs lessons within and across disciplines that teach strategies for nurturing creative and critical thinking in the gifted and talented students.
- Locates and develops resources for assisting gifted and talented students in the fulfillment of their creative potential.
- Adapts the classroom to the learning differences of each gifted and talented learner including the management of large and small groups and independent learning.
- Identifies strategies from gifted education that can be used in the regular classroom.

Differentiation
Participants will explore the reasons as to why gifted students should be serviced in our schools and take the mystery out of teaching them by implementing the research-supported strategies provided in this book. This updated resource focuses on ways that teachers can not only identify gifted students but how to extend, accelerate, and enrich curriculum to meet the needs of gifted learners.
Some of the topics that will be covered:
How to prepare a differentiated classroom
Curriculum compacting
Encouraging creativity
Teachers will read and respond to the text, interact with their colleagues, create products, and participate in a Zoom discussion.
Teachers will receive a book for this course.

Depth & Complexity
Objectives:
- Become familiar with the Depth & Complexity icons.
- Understand how the Depth & Complexity icons are a thinking framework.
