Legislative Youth Advisory Council Applications Open Until March 22

The Louisiana Legislative Youth Advisory Council (LYAC) is now accepting applications for membership from high school students who have an interest in representing the voices of other young people around the state. LYAC is an annually appointed body composed entirely of students that addresses issues affecting the youth of Louisiana.

The purpose of LYAC is to facilitate the communication between youth and the legislature, and to give students a unique opportunity to be involved in the workings of state government. The council studies and addresses issues of importance to young people, such as education, community service, employment, strategies to increase youth participation in government, safe environments for youth, substance abuse, underage drinking, and youth health and physical fitness.

Members of the council are selected from a wide pool of applicants from around the state who display a strong interest in civic involvement. The 31-member body includes three student members selected from each of the congressional districts.

The deadline for applications is March 22, 2019. Click here to access the application. All applicants are required to submit two recommendation letters and short essay questions with their application. For additional information please contact Megan Bella at bellam@legis.la.gov or 225-342-2370.

Congratulations to Saints, Lady Saints Basketball on Fantastic Seasons!

This past Friday, the No. 2 Lady Saints basketball team capped off a remarkable season by playing for a state championship for the first time in 10 years. Though they fell four points shy against Lee Magnet, 64-60, it was a thrilling game in Alexandria in which they led by eight points in the third quarter against the top seed in Division II. View video highlights.
The Saints also reached the state tournament as the No. 10 seed - their first trip to Marsh Madness since 2016 - and they eliminated No. 7 E.D. White and No. 15 Parkview Baptist before falling just short in the semifinals Wednesday against No. 3 De La Salle, 55-52. The Saints had the Cavaliers on the ropes early, leading by as many as 12 points, but De La Salle's experience and the Saints' 11 turnovers proved to be the difference. View video highlights.

Saints Read Initiative Highlighted in American Press

Check out The American Press' feature on “Saints Read!” our first attempt at St. Louis Catholic to facilitate a campus-wide common reading program to connect students, faculty/staff and parents around a single book – Breaking Free, by Saints chemistry teacher Caleb Monroe.

It's never too late to start reading! You can start any time, and be sure to join us for the Book End Party on April 3.
