EYMS Mission Statement
Principal's Message
I want each of you to feel comfortable about the upcoming EOG tests and NC Final Exams that your students are getting ready to participate in so I am dedicating this newsletter to all things testing. I will try to give you everything you may need to help your student be successful. Teachers at East Yancey really focus on growth, rather than achievement level, being the most important outcome of testing. Growth is a more accurate indicator of how much a student has learned as opposed to a level 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5.
If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to call me or your student's teacher any time.
Thank you,
Ms. Presnell

Achievement Showcase.....What's That?
It is hard to believe our school year is coming to an end. Thus begins a flurry of activities to finish out the school year. I have spent much of this school year reflecting on our mission statement.
Our mission is to provide a nurturing educational environment where students develop academic, physical, social, and emotional skills necessary for a lifetime of learning.
I believe we do our best to make this happen for every child that walks through our doors. It is important to us for students to feel successful in all areas. However, at the end of the school year we were only recognizing students for excelling in academics. This practice does not support the mission statement which we have declared. I have asked myself the question and asked it of my faculty: what do we want from our students? The answer is not to be A or B Honor roll but to develop a love of learning that will last them a lifetime. I feel strongly that students should know where their strengths are and what they need to work on, not how they fit in our magical grading system. All students should feel valued and be celebrated for those strengths and for their ability to grow and improve.
Each student brings to East Yancey unique gifts and they deserve to be recognized for that. There is a big push in education to teach students the skills they need to be able to collaborate. No matter what awards system we use, we would be promoting individuals as opposed to the efforts of working together. School should be about empowering all students, not just the ones who are strong at the core subjects.
Therefore, we will not have a traditional end of year awards program but instead a showcase event that will celebrate all of our students.
Thursday June 6th at 8:30 will be our 6th and 7th Grade Academic Showcase.
Thursday, June 6th at 6:30pm will be a more formal Academic Showcase and promotion ceremony for 8th grade.
During these two events, parents and guardians will begin in the gym as we have in the past. Then after a brief program, you will be dismissed to see what amazing things your student has accomplished this year!
Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to seeing you at the showcase events.
