Hall Math Fall 2018 Newsletter
Sharing helpful math info as we settle in to the school year
Math Challenge
Submit an answer (either typed out or a picture of a handwritten response) with an explanation of how you solved the problem below to monique_albani-ethier@whps.org and you will be entered into a raffle for a gift card.
Preparing for the PSAT/SAT
For students who have already taken the PSAT and/or SAT, they can and should be taking advantage of Khan Academy's personalized practice. Link your test scores from your College Board account to your Khan Academy account and you will be able to work through individualized practice to prepare you for the next test.
Calculators Required for the PSAT (October 10th)
We strongly suggest that students/families purchase their own calculator for use during their math class and the PSAT. We have classroom calculators available and can certainly loan them out (the same way we do with textbooks) for the academic year, but if it is financially feasible for students/families to purchase their own, we recommend you do this prior to the PSAT on Wed Oct 10th. If you would prefer to submit an electronic form requesting to check out a calculator from Ms. Albani-Ethier (department supervisor), please do so here.
Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II students
In our core course sequence, students will be participating in Benchmark Assessments throughout the year. These will assess students' ability to apply understanding of current concepts in open-ended and SAT-like problem solving contexts. It is important that students work diligently to prepare for these assessments and demonstrate their knowledge as they will become one option for students to demonstrate proficiency on the high school graduation competency requirement for mathematics (more detailed information on this to follow as the district finalizes these requirements).
Support for your Math Classes
If you are noticing that you are rusty on some prior skills as you learn new topics in your current course, consider using Khan Academy for support. The department compiled assignments of pre-requisite skill practice for our core courses. Please review the assignment for your course here.
Khan Academy can also help you to reinforce current skills and topics that you are learning.
Hall Math Center 2018-2019
We have math teachers available during the day for additional support.
For Fun
As a department, we are encouraging students to become more interested and aware of the many connections between the study of mathematics and computer science. We offer courses in computer science (see Program of Studies), but also encourage students to learn more throughout their years about the importance and excitement of computer science.
