VRA Media Center News - November 2019

We are thankful for all our new books!

It was wonderful to host the VRA PTO Book Fair in the media center last month. As a result, we are so pleased to have been able to add more that 60 new books to the media center's collection. We hope every student was also able to get a great book. Please use this newsletter to discover all the exciting literacy programs the media center has to offer throughout the year.

November is Picture Book Month

Picture Book Month is an international literacy initiative that celebrates the print picture book during the month of November. Every day in November, there is a new post from a picture book champion explaining why he/she thinks picture books are important. In this digital age where people are predicting the coming death of print books, picture books (the print kind) need love. And the world needs picture books. There’s nothing like the physical page turn of a beautifully crafted picture book. For more information visit or check-out a picture book from the VRA Media Center today!

Veterans Day Reading and Writing Challenge

We have so many awesome books in our VRA library that focus on Veterans, soldiers and times of war. Come by the media center and check-out one of these special books, fiction or non-fiction. Read the book and then write a letter to a Veteran telling them about the book, thank them for their service and wishing them a great holiday season. You can include Veterans Day, Thanksgiving or Christmas if you would like. Turn in your neatly written or typed letter and we will send these letters to local veterans. Please include your first name, last initial and your teacher's name on the letter so that if your veteran is able to write back we can get the letter to you. All who complete the Veterans Day reading challenge will receive a Veterans Day Dog tag and small prize for participating. The deadline for completing the challenge is November 26, 2019. Turn your letters in to the media center.

Rubik's Cube Mosaic

We have borrowed a special set of 2x2 Rubik's Cubes for the Media Center this month. Each of the cubes can be solved and placed into a mosaic forming a cute emoji smiley face, a heart and a hummingbird. Many students throughout the school have helped to build the different mosaics. If you are a Rubik's Cube fan, check out this special project in the media center. Students can come by the media center during their free time to help solve the 90 2x2 cubes we have, from November 4th - 15th so we can pack them up solved and return to the Rubik's Cube Library.

Congratulations to our two Sentence Scary Story Writing Contest Winner Sanjana K.

The Uber Driver

The Uber driver wasn't that chatty so she checked her phone. That's when the Uber driver said he was there.

Our Awesome Volunteers - Meet Kendall

Kendall is an amazing 8th grade intern. She brightens the media center every time she enters. You will probably find her shelving books but she is willing to help with any library project. She can even recommend a good book because Kendall loves to read! We enjoy having her and we even have given her the nick name "the Book Fairy."

Birthday Book Club

The Valley Ridge Academy Media Center’s Birthday Book Club is a wonderful way to commemorate your child’s birthday. Your participation not only enriches the library collection but allows you and your child to be personally involved in its growth. To take part in the Birthday Book Club donate one new undamaged hardcover book (not a board book). This book should be a book that your child enjoys and one that we don’t have in the media center already. You can choose a new book at the book store or a new book from the Book Fair. A quick check of our library catalog (Destiny) will tell you if we already have the book. If you would prefer, you may make a monetary donation of $15 and your child can choose from recently acquired books that are waiting to be put on the shelves.

The following is included with your enrollment;

- A special book plate placed inside the front cover of the donated book with your child’s name and birthday.

- A photo will be taken of your child with the book he/she chooses and will be displayed in the media center and online in the Valley Ridge Reader. This photo will be sent home with your child at the end of the year to keep and enjoy.

- Your child will be the first to read and/or check-out the book that he/she
