CAASPP Testing info from Justina:
Hello all!
It is that time of year again! As CAASPP testing season is getting close I thought it would be good to remind everyone of a few things -
First, some helpful links!
Online Practice and Training Test Portal
If you are having trouble signing in or accessing the information you need, I can reset passwords and change permissions on accounts. If you have any issues, please let me know! I am one of the coordinators for the district and can make calls to CAASPP on your behalf if technical difficulties arise, and I also deliver materials for testing that are needed. This information also goes for ELPAC testing if you are having trouble with that too! Remember the ELPAC TOMS and the CAASPP TOMS sites are different. The highlighted links I have included in this email will take you to the respective sites.
You can call me at (530) 283-6500 ext 5240 or email me at jdanderson@pcoe.k12.ca.us if you have any questions.
Finally, the TOMS website will be down from Wednesday the 27th of this month until Monday April 1st. So if you cannot access what you need you will need to wait until the following Tuesday April 2nd.
Physical Fitness Test information- 5th, 7th and 9th grades required
Physical Fitness Test: Data Submission Process Resources
The Physical Fitness Test (PFT) data submission process generates a significant number of questions from the field each year. The following resources are available to assist in successfully completing this portion of the PFT:
- PFT Coordinators Manual – information and instructions on how to prepare, coordinate, administer, and successfully submit your PFT data - https://pftdata.org/files/Coordinator_Manual.pdf
- PFT Help Center – provides frequently asked questions (FAQs) and answers for all areas of the PFT as well as a link to contact the PFT Help Desk if further assistance is needed - https://pftdata.org/helpcenter.aspx

7th/8th grade math curriculum update
I have been getting questions on the direction we are headed for 7th and 8th grade math curriculum. I understand that the last VT math meeting it was decided that 8th grade would use CPM and 7th grade would use Math Links, identifying 8th grade as the transitional year to Integrated I and CPM in 9th grade.
I spoke with Shawn this afternoon to clarify and we agreed on the following:
8th grade: CPM, CC 3
7th grade: CPM, CC 2, or Math Links
Considerations for which to use in 7th grade include teacher preference and training. If we have a teacher new to 7th grade math, I would recommend CPM, as that is the direction I see us heading in the future. CPM also has superior training and support for any new 7th grade teacher.

Fire and Flood- Project Based Learning
As you all know we have been growing our Place and Project Based Learning efforts in the PUSD. Buck Institute for Education, recently remanned PBLWorks, is a national leader and our partner. Once trained and resourced in PBL you as PUSD teachers can use every issue, problem or phenomenon as a pathway to science inquiry and engineering design. Here is a fresh article from our training partner related to this very topic.
https://www.pblworks.org/blog/little-too-real-world-our-project-wildfires-floods
I am excited about local PBL in the PUSD and the PBL 101 training on June 19-21, 2019. Each grade-level team will design a local PBL inter-disciplinary unit for the 2019-2020 school year. We will have the support of local scientists during the training to help us design the best resource possible.
Independent Study Handbook updates
- Prior to enrolling in Independent Study, an SST will be held with the students’ current teachers, counselor (high school), administrator and parents/guardians to discuss the educational options available and determine the best path for the student. Students may enter the Independent Study program at any time during the school year, however, if it is deemed necessary to re-enter onto the main campus, this change will occur only at quarter or semester breaks.
A student with an IEP must have a change of placement IEP team meeting prior to being accepted in ISO.
ISO courses cannot be labeled differently on the student schedule or transcript. For example, if a student is enrolled in ISO English 11, the transcript must read English 11, without an ISO designation.
Students will meet with their supervising teacher a minimum of one hour per week. For UC- a-g approved courses students are expected to spend at least one hour per week per a-g course engaged in interactive instruction and/or academic tutoring/advising. This instruction and/or support may be provided onsite or through virtual means.
Independent study students who are not meeting the minimum requirements for attendance will be placed on academic probation. They will receive two warning letters. After the second warning letter, an evaluation will be conducted to determine whether Independent Study is an appropriate placement.
