Special Education & Grades
Here are some answers to questions that have been asked about Special Education and grades:
Q: Who gives the grades for students in my class who are on an IEP?
A: If they are receiving instruction from both teachers in the core content they should combine their grades for one grade. If they are obtaining most of the instruction from one or the other then that teacher should be responsible for giving the grade.
If the student is receiving direct instruction in the resource room they should be getting grades from the special education teachers. Those grades can be added to the general education teacher grades. If the student is receiving support in the resource room then they will bring the general education classwork and the special education teacher will assist with completion.
Q: If students are being pulled out of the classroom during part of a core subject in which they miss an independent work assignment, should the teacher send the student's assignment to the resource room to complete with the SpEd teacher even though the student missed part of the lesson or is the student exempt from that assignment?
A: No they would be exempt from that assignment.
Q: Are Special Education students expected to complete on-grade level work from the classroom with modifications for a grade?
A: If the student is capable of completing the on-grade level assignment with modifications then yes they should receive a grade. Ex: 30 math problems over 2-digit addition on a 2nd grade level; a special education student may complete 15 problems. They should be given a grade. Based on 15 being 100%.
It is the expectation of the Staff school culture at Penn that there are open and collaborative conversations about student progress across teams including Special Education and English Language Development. If you have a question or concern, please schedule a meeting with the teacher of that department. If you have further questions or concerns after you have met together, I am available to help navigate answers to your questions.
