Best Wishes for a Happy Holiday and New Year
As the holiday season quickly approaches and 2015 is just around the corner, I want to thank you for your support this school year and all of your efforts in helping your student. I hope that you have a wonderful holiday and a great start to 2015!
Welcome to Room 237!
What Happened Last Week
- Notes & Homework: Students continued their study of currents by focusing on ocean currents with a series of notes, demonstrations, and homework. Video homework assignments were assigned on Monday and Tuesday, with students required to watch a short segment posted to My Big Campus and answer a series of questions before the start of the next day's class. Check out pictures of the week's demonstrations and activities in the gallery below!
- Quiz: Students completed a quiz over the week's notes and vocabulary on Friday (12/12).
Learning About Ocean Currents!
In this demonstration, two sets of warm (yellow) and cold (blue) milk jars were combined, with students making observations and conclusions based off of last week's notes. See if your student can explain to you what happened in this demonstration!
Students demonstrated surface currents and the patterns they form, called gyres.
Students learned about differences in density caused by the salinity of water. An egg was used to show this difference in density between freshwater and saltwater. See if your student can explain to you how we floated an egg in the middle of the glass! The picture below might be a clue...
Hint. Hint. I colored the freshwater blue.
What to Expect this Week
- Notes: Students will continue their study of currents and how they impact global environments, by learning about climate patterns. Quick vocabulary notes will be taken on Monday, with vocabulary terms posted to Quizlet for review. A vocabulary quiz will be completed on Thursday (12/18).
- Group Climate Research: Students will work with their groups to research an assigned climate type and develop a visually appealing poster to present on Thursday (12/18). Students will be provided work time Monday - Wednesday to research and create their poster.
Special Note: This week started off with quite the absence list! Should your student be absent this week, please note that I have posted all vocabulary terms to Quizlet for studying and a copy of the climate research project handout has been added to My Big Campus under the Resources tab of their Science 7 group. I hope that you will find these postings helpful for keeping your student current with the assignments. Please let me know if you have any questions.
