Specialty News Update April 2017

Technology News
- Junior Kindergarten has continued to work on identifying, finding and typing letters and numbers on the keyboard using a variety of programs and websites. They were also introduced to MaxCount and entered some letters and numbers into a spreadsheet.
- Kindergarten used MaxCount to created a spreadsheet and graph of their favorite subjects. They also started "favorite things" slide show project using MaxShow.
- First grade used Microsoft Excel to record data collected by surveying our Kindergarten classes. They learned to customize the look of their spreadsheets and create graphs. They also used excel to design a unique mosaic style illustration.
- Second grade has finished their county website projects designed using Weebly. We also reviewed Microsoft Excel to prepare student for building graphs related to thier National Parks project.
- Third grade has finished their Native American Tribe websites designed in Weebly. Some students also used Code Academy to explore HTML.
- Fourth grade students have been working in Pages to create an informative trifold pamphlet about an element from the periodic table.
- Fifth grade students have been working in Pages to create an informative trifold pamphlet about the bill of right.

Health/Physical Education News
Health:
JrK: This past month finished a unit on feelings. The students learned how to identify various feels and ways to successfully cope with each.
K: This past month the students finished a unit on Home and Travel Safety. The students learned to recognize emergencies and respond appropriately. They also learned to to recognize safe behavior in or near motor vehicles.
1st: This past month the students finished a unit on Keeping Active. The students were able to describe and practice activities that enhance individual health throughout life, such as enough sleep, nutrition, and exercise. They also learned to identify and apply principles of good posture.
2nd: This past month the students finished a unit on Staying Safe. The students were able to identify ways to avoid injuries around water and animals; at school; on wheels; and in cars and buses.
3rd: This past month the students finished a unit on Activity for a Healthy Body. Throughout the unit the students learned various ways to keep their bodies fit. They learned now to stay safe while taking part in physical activities. They also learned about the importance of sleep and how rest and sleep have an effect on the body.
4th: This past month the students finished a unit on Home and Travel Safety. Through the unit the students learned about safety measures to prevent injuries outdoors, in motor vehicles, and in weather emergencies. They also learned about various ways to resolve conflict and avoid violence.
5th: This past month the students finished a unit on Planning for Safety. Throughout the unit the students learned how to recognize and respond to threatening situations. They also learned about ways to avoid violence.
Physical Education:
JrK – 3rd: This past month the students learned to balanced in various ways using a variety of equipment and their own body weight.
4th-5th: This past month the students learned rules, regulations and techniques to successfully play spike ball.

So far in Spanish class...
* Junior Kindergarten has been learning about their favorite vegetables in Spanish: los vegetales.
* Kindergarten has been learning about wild animals: los animales salvajes.
* First grade just started learning about different careers in Spanish: las profesiones.
* Second grade finished their video about the weather: el tiempo.
* Third grade finished creating their restaurant menu in Spanish.
* Fourth grade completed their daily routine on a regular school day in Spanish.
* Fifth grade created their own family tree and made sentences in Spanish to describe their family members.

ART NEWS: Creatively Speaking!
This month in the art room most of the classes were working on
JUNIOR KINDERGARTEN
- Students learned about March birthday artists Doctor Seuss and Vincent Van Gogh
- Students learned about Doctor Seuss and created hand fish for a One Fish Two Fish project.
- They created a Starry night with a collaged background and sparkly swirls in the sky.
KINDERGARTEN
- Students learned the March birthday artists Mondrian and Dr. Seuss
- Students created a drawing of the Truffula Trees from The Lorax
- They created a painting of geometric shapes in primary colors like the artist Mondrian
FIRST GRADE
- Students learned about architecture and Italian Artist Michelangelo
- Students experienced drawing upside down as Michelangelo did in the Sistine Chapel
- They learned about domes and columns and created an architectural collage.
SECOND GRADE
- Students learned about the art of weaving
- Students created a landscape background for their tree weaving
- They learned about the warp string and the weft yarn and the weaving process
THIRD GRADE
- Students studied American artists Wayne Thiebaud and Grant Woods
- They created donut artwork as a reward activity and ate their donuts
- They learned the painting American Gothic and created a Parody drawing of the painting
FOURTH GRADE
- Students learned about Louis Comfort Tiffany and Michelangelo
- Students created a Faux stained glass art work
- They learned about the art of stone sculpture and early finishers got to carve a soap sculpture
FIFTH GRADE
- Students learned about artist and illustrator Norman Rockwell
- Students learned about the artist’s work on the magazine Saturday Evening Post
- Students illustrated their own magazine cover complete with title of magazine and title of issue
- They chose their own subject matter and illustrated it in color pencils

News from the Orchestra Pit of Mr. Chris Hoffman
This month in music class all our students began working towards their spring concerts coming up in May.
Junior K learned several songs already, including, Riddle Ree, The Bus, The Ants go Marching, Let's Go Driving, and Mbombela.
Kindergarten has been learning the songs for their Spring Musical "The Cat and the Rat". You can also see a video of their ballroom dancing here.
1st grade finished up Ode to Joy and began working on their songs for the Musical "Pirates! The Musical"
2nd Grade finished up improvising on the jazz piece C Jam Blues. You can catch the video of their performances here.
3rd Grade continued to put together their percussion piece Pie, Apple Pie. They also began working on their songs for the Musical "Pirates! The Musical".
4th Grade finished putting together the piece Dancing Bear Family for marimbas. They also began working on their songs for the Musical "Pirates! The Musical".
5th Grade continued their exploration of the history of Western Music. They learned about the Baroque and Classical Periods and began learning their songs and parts for "Pirates! The Musical".
