Skipton Community Orchestra
Autumn Newsletter 2015
We Are Busy Bees!
We hope you had a lovely summer and enjoyed our month's break in July. We are now back to it and trying out some new pieces of music. At the last rehearsal we had a dabble with Dmitri Shostakovich's Second Waltz as this particular piece was requested by two of our members. We couldn't refuse! Our next new piece is a Harry Potter Highlights arrangement by John Williams and we will try it out at the next rehearsal on Tuesday 29th September. We hope you can come along to see what it sounds like!
Carleton Village Hall Concert
As you may know we have a booking to play at Carleton Village Hall on Sunday 4th October at 6pm till 8.30pm, as part of their Harvest Festival. It will be an informal family feel affair with a table quiz, raffle and Jacob's Join before the concert. We have been asked to play from 7.30pm till 8pm and then Carleton Ladies Choir will sing a few songs. They are very keen for us to give the audience a chance to play some musical instruments as well. We hope that you are available to play and join in the fun from 6pm! We will confirm the play list at the next rehearsal.
Banners
We are in the process of purchasing two X banners (see pic below) to display when we are playing at events. We have left it in the hands of Omnis Services of Skipton to come up with a design after a visit to them mid August and have just finalised it all, after much deliberation and indecision! We will now have a firm logo to use in the future for all our advertising and we can't wait for you to see them both at the next rehearsal!
Tesco donation
We wrote to Tesco at Skipton recently to ask for a donation of refreshments so we can concentrate on using rehearsal fees for buying music scores. They have kindly given us enough supplies to keep us going for a fair while! When we collected them they asked if we would be interested in playing at the front of the store in the run up to Christmas. We can use it to promote the orchestra as well as shaking our donating buckets. It would be a Saturday or Sunday afternoon...so watch this space for a date!
New orchestra photo
Jamie Fletcher has very kindly taken a new photo of the orchestra which has included Jess. See if you can spot her as she's hiding!
Christmas Concert
We are already making plans to hold a Christmas concert even though it's September. We have a date of Friday 4th December at Christ Church C of E School, Skipton. Please pencil the date in your diaries. It will be early evening again and we are hoping to include a choir of children from the school. We may even organise a few pieces from children who are learning an instrument. This will make it even more of a community event....ho ho ho!
Holy Trinity Church Summer Fete 2015
We received a lovely thank you card from Reverend Veronica James at Holy Trinity Church in Skipton. It read, 'Thank you all so much for playing at the Holy Trinity Fete. It was a delight to listen to your music and it gave the many visitors an enjoyable time in the church'. I'm sure we can play at next summer's fete with praise like that!
Funding News
We have recently applied to Skipton Rotary Club for help towards the funding of new music scores. They are still looking at our application so we hope to have more news at the end of September about their decision. Fingers crossed!
Players Needed!
We have been asked to play at Skipton Library at a session called ‘Library Circle’. It’s aimed at older people and meets on the last Tuesday of the month at 2 pm, on the ground floor of the Library. They normally have a speaker for the first 45 minutes then refreshments, finishing about 3.30 pm. They would love some of the orchestra to come and play at their last session of the year on Tuesday 24 November. They are short on space so would only want a handful of us! Please let us know if you are interested in playing.
Bookings
As word spreads about the orchestra we are becoming more in demand. Here are some of the events we have been invited to recently: Sheep Day, Grassington Festival. Gargrave Open Gardens, Skipton Christmas Lights Switch On, Holy Trinity Summer Fete, Christ Church C of E School, Tesco Skipton and a nursing home....to name a few! If you do know of an event or venue that would like us to play then please let them know that we need at least two months notice so we can let our players know and organise the music.

New and Lapsed Members
We always welcome new and lapsed members. We realise that life has a funny way of taking over sometimes so feel free to return at anytime. Please do spread the word about us as we find that word of mouth is the best way of encouraging people to give us a go. We also have posters at our rehearsals to take away and display at village halls, work staffrooms, churches and so on...so help yourself. If you'd like us to post or email you one then please get in contact.
Keeping in touch...
From time to time we send out emails as well as this newsletter. Please can you keep us updated of any changes to your email address. Also, if we do not hold any details for you, please let us know and we can add you our mailing list. Likewise, if you do not wish to receive any emails from us, please let us know and we will remove your details. We do not share your information with any organisations. We purely use it for keeping in touch with what is happening with the orchestra.....and the odd social!
