A Note from Principal Curran
Updates from Thorpe Creek Elementary Dec. 2022
(Resharing from the last principal newsletter because winter weather is here!)
Winter weather is here! Here is some information to help you plan for school days impacted by winter weather.
If HSE Schools announces a "two hour delay" our elementary school day will begin at 9:40 a.m. Plan to go to your morning bus stop approximately two hours later than a typical morning. Car riders will begin entering the school around 9:35 a.m. Lunch is served on a two hour delay day and dismissal remains at 2:10.
NEW THIS YEAR: If HSE Schools announces a "snow day or cancellation day," school is cancelled for the day. Elementary students will not meet with their teacher virtually and will not complete assignments on Canvas. School is cancelled for this day and will be made up at school in person on a scheduled "flex day." Flex days are identified on the HSE school calendar (see the link at the bottom of this newsletter to HSE's district calendar). If more than 2 flex days are needed to make up snow/cancellation days this year, HSE may provide virtual instruction. More on this to come, if needed!
On snow days/cancellation days we hope your family is able to stay home, safe and warm, and enjoy some time playing in the snow together! If you are unable to stay home with your child, now is the time to make a plan for your family!
Any changes to the school day will be announced on the local news, on HSE's Twitter and Facebook, and in Parent Square.
Also, please be sure your child dresses for the winter weather when they come to school. Boots, hats, mittens/gloves, winter coat, and snow pants are all appropriate! We play outdoors when temps "feel like 25 degrees" or above. Please be sure to put your child's name in any/all clothing that they may remove so we can return them if they are misplaced.
Winter weather is here and I LOVE to see this season through the eyes of children!

Visual supports that can be used at home and other settings during the holidays and celebrations
Here is a visual support/social narrative that helps to explain and navigate visiting family and friends for the holidays. Find more tips here as well as downloadable narratives that can be changed to fit the needs/supports of your child!
Best Wishes, Nurse Firmand!
Beginning in January until Community Health Network assigns TCE a new school nurse, all medical emails/inquiries may be sent to Amy Hanna, HSE's Nurse Supervisor, and Sara Curran, TCE principal (firstname.lastname@example.org and email@example.com). Emailing BOTH will help ensure a community of care for your child during this transition. Amy Hanna will address medical questions and Sara Curran will ensure that appropriate school stakeholders are informed of any special care, changes in routines, etc. for your child.
TCE will have substitute nurses (registered nurses) in our clinic daily beginning January 5th until a new nurse from Community Health has been assigned to our school.
When a new nurse is assigned to TCE, we'll share their name and contact information! Then all email correspondences/inquiries will go directly to that individual.

Do you have broken holiday lights? TCE will recycle them! A collection bin is outside door 1.
Do you know an employee who makes HSE Schools a better place for others? Do you know someone who exemplifies the Mission of HSE Schools? Have you observed an employee who goes above and beyond their job responsibilities/duties to make a difference? Nominate them for a R.A.V.E. Review! It will make their day!
