Fall Sports Competition Procedures for Parents and Spectators
Friday, March 5, 2021 begins the competition season for fall sports. Everyone is very excited and ready to see the student-athletes compete. Due to the restrictions and safety protocols still in place from the COVID-19 pandemic, spectators will be limited to two parents or guardians of the participating student-athlete. Anyone who is not a parent or guardian of the participating student-athlete, and who does not appear on the approved spectator list, will not be granted admittance to the event. If you have questions regarding this or any of the following information please contact our AD, Bruce Henderson @ rbhenderson@smcps.org
Required spectator precautions to help slow the spread of COVID-19:
Stay at home if you are sick
All spectators must wear a mask at all events at all times
All spectators must practice social distancing in the stands and across all school grounds
Everyone is encouraged to wash their hands regularly or bring their own hand sanitizer
Avoid high touch surfaces
Game day procedures for spectators:
Spectators will be charged admission of $5.00 per game/match. We will be accepting cash at the ticket booth. It is highly recommended that you bring the exact dollar amount to limit the need to make change
Our stands/bleachers will be marked off to account for social distancing. Please only sit in the identified areas.
Where applicable, stands will be cleared of spectators between events if there are two games played back to back on the same field/court
Spectators are expected to exit the stadium or gym promptly after the event is over
Concession stands will be available. Food and drink products will be limited to individually wrapped or pre-packaged items
Spectators may be asked to leave the event if they fail to adhere to these requirements
These requirements are subject to modification at any time based on local and state guidance. St. Mary’s County Public Schools (SMCPS) reserves the right to close these events to all spectators.
We will continue to monitor local and state health and safety guidelines and restrictions and will make decisions accordingly. We thank you for your support, and with your help, we can ensure the opportunity we have been provided to engage our student-athletes in education based athletics continues.

Literacy Corner
Sometimes, it seems like others with a big vocabulary have a secret to learning all these words, but anyone can improve their vocabulary, which will in turn help improve reading and writing. Here are some tips to increase your word power!
1) Read a lot, and challenge yourself: The more you read, the more words you pick up - and try reading outside of your comfort zone.
2) Pay attention in your foreign language classes: English has lots of connections to other languages - for example, mano means "hand" in Spanish. Think of how many English words share that root, and are linked in meaning, like manual labor, which is work you do with your hands. Understanding root words can help you break down difficult words.
3) Use a practice program like Membean - All students have access to a personalized vocabulary program called Membean. It assesses students at their vocabulary level, and provides personalized practice. There are special settings for students who need support, too. Ask your English teacher or email Ms. Bridges (kjbridges@smcps.org) if you're not already using it in class.

March is Women's History Month
Every March, our nation recognizes the remarkable accomplishments of women as a part of Women’s History Month. Our history is rich with amazing stories of strong, courageous, and brilliant women. Leonardtown High School also wants to celebrate the achievements of women.
TRIVIA
Kamala Harris became the first female vice president in American history on January 20, 2021, at the inauguration of Joe Biden as the 46th president of the United States. This date also marked the 100th anniversary of women winning the right to vote!
Do you know which amendment to the US Constitution granted women the right to vote? Do you know when this happened? Check back next week for the answer!

- We have added apparel items to MySchoolBucks. Our starting inventory has limited sizes in all designs. But new designs and sizes will be entered as they are received. As orders are received they will be placed in the Main Office for pickup the next business day.
- There is now a "Donation Item" to LHS's suite of items available on MySchoolBucks. Patrons can add a donation to their basket when they are shopping for other items. There is a field where they can request the funds to a certain organization.
- Looking for a good stocking stuffer? New LHS facemasks are now available for $10/each.

Help Cure Blood Cancer!
LHS has two student candidates participating in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Students of the Year (SOY) fundraising campaign to raise funds and awareness for blood cancer patients & their families. My team, Team Fly4ACure has a fundraising goal of $50,000 and we need your help!
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS exists to find cures and ensure access to treatments for blood cancer patients.
Your donation not only supports my fundraising but the millions of patients and their families touched by blood cancer. All donations are tax-deductible and extremely appreciated! Every penny counts!
