Charlie Gordon
Ashley Carrier
Before the Operation
Charlie was a hard-worker in his class with Miss Kinnian. “Dr. Nemur was worried about using me, but Dr. Strauss told him Miss Kinnian recommended me the best from all the people who she was teaching,” (Keyes 36). This evidence is explaining how Charlie is a hard-worker since Miss Kinnian recommended him for the surgery and she even said that he was the best out of the people in her class. If he wasn't a hard-worker, he probably wouldn't have been chosen. Another big trait for Charlie is superstitious. He was a very superstitious man. “Anyway, I’m keeping my rabbit’s foot with me,” (Keyes 36). This evidence is explaining how Charlie believes in the good luck charms because of how he keeps his lucky rabbit’s foot with him at all times especially when he takes tests and wants to do a very good job on them.
After the Operation
After the operation, Charlie became smarter, but also depressed. “Dr. Strauss on the other hand might be called a genius, although I feel that his areas of knowledge are too limited,” (Keyes 51). This evidence clearly shows that Charlie got smarter because of how his language and punctuation changed and became way more formal. It's also showing that he’s noticing different things in people. It might not be something good, but it clearly shows that he’s becoming more intelligent. “I think I stayed in bed all week, but I remember Mrs. Flynn bringing food to me a few times,” (Keyes 59). This evidence explains how Charlie was becoming depressed and less active a little bit after the surgery which was definitely not a good sign for him. This change after the surgery was a drastic change and was also not a good change at all.
Why Charlie is a Dynamic Character
In the beginning of the story, Charlie is clueless and he’s always happy, but at the end he became smart and he got mad easily. He also separated himself from people. Charlie gets more intelligent during the story and he also gets a little distant. He found out when Algernon became less active and he lost his intelligence and died, that the same was going to happen to him, so he became depressed and later on his intelligence began to decrease rapidly. The author is trying to tell you that people can change, no matter what kind of a person they are. If you work hard enough, you can change in a good way. They are also trying to say that determination is one of the many things that lead to success.
