The Lumberjack Edge
Cedar Mill Elementary School
May 18, 2018
Dear Cedar Mill Community,
Thank you for your support in renewing the five-year local option levy to maintain 300 teachers throughout the Beaverton School District, which passed with 72% approval. This means 6 teachers will be maintained at Cedar Mill for 2018-2019. We are grateful for the strong message the community sent about the importance of our children's education and the health of our Beaverton community.
Thank you from the entire Cedar Mill staff for the fun-filled week of May 7th for Staff Appreciation! Staff felt so pampered with all the treats, notes, and verbal thank yous as well. Special thanks to Sarah Miller for coordinating PTC appreciation events and all the folks who helped decorate doors, provided treats, and a special lunch to end the week. We all feel so lucky to work with such an amazing community!
Sincerely,
Amy Chamberlain
Principal

Vision Fun Run
Ella and I would like to again thank you for allowing her to come into your school last year and share the Vision Fun Run with your students. We had great turnout with just over 200 families which raised $6000 for children's vision care! This year, she'd like to raise $10,000, and as the old saying goes, it takes a village.
We would like to request that you please share the attached flyer in your weekly newsletter and any other format you feel would be impactful. This is a great family friendly activity that gives people the opportunity to make a difference while having fun!

A Special Message from your Cedar Mill Elementary PTC Board
Thanks to your generous donations to our annual Fun Run, the PTC Board in conjunction with feedback from teachers will be supplying the bulk school supplies needed for the 2018-2019 school year.
Buying many items* in bulk not only reduces the overall cost, but ensures consistency in quality and availability to ALL students. Additionally, it will allow teachers to build class sets of non-consumable items, such as scissors, to reduce the amount of waste from purchasing these items year-over-year.
To make school supply shopping easier we are also continuing to offer on-line ordering of school supplies through schoolKidz. Your order will be delivered to the Cedar Mill Elementary and available for pick up on Aug 23 at Stop, Drop & Smile.
You can find the list of school supplies parents/guardians are to supply in the attachment, as well as ordering details from schoolKidz. The list will also be published on the school website. If you choose not to use schoolKidz, supplies can be dropped off at your student’s classroom at Stop, Drop, & Smile or on the first day of school.
Sincerely,
Cedar Mill Elementary PTC Board
*see the attachment for the list of items.
Safe Routes to School Survey
As you may know, Beaverton School District received a two year Safe Routes to School grant. The purpose of program is to make walking and biking to school safe, convenient and fun.
One of the requirements of the grant is to get some information about how your students are now traveling to school and what their parents/ guardians think about the routes to school. This survey will come to you one more time after this, next May.
The following link was generated from the National Safe Routes to School Center and will be combined with classroom travel tallies to give us a good picture of how students are getting to and from schools throughout the district.
The school’s survey will be open for responses for three weeks starting May 1.
We appreciate your help in giving us information to make our program effective for all Beaverton School District students.
Magnificent Music Days
Dear Cedar Mill Parents:
We're having Magnificent Music Days again soon! Two or three times a year, I ask the students to think about sharing a song they can sing, or play on an instrument (something they have practiced), show and tell something they bring in from another country, share some words in another language they know, or make up a skit to share (mostly upper grades do the drama part).
The goal is to give the students an opportunity to get up in front of their classmates and gain confidence in presenting. We also talk about and practice the very important art of being a good audience member.
Although we do love to share what we've learned with our parents, this is an event for the students only. Parents, if you have any questions please feel free to contact Ms. Cole, laura_cole@beaverton.k12.or.us.
I look forward to your students' time to shine!
Magnificent Music Days:
During Music Specials, May 22-23-24, 2018.

SBAC Testing
The administration of our state assessment will take place between now and June 8th.
Beginning this year, state test scores are available in ParentVUE! You will be able to see your child’s test results sooner than in prior years with less impact on the environment. For the English Language and Math tests, a student’s score is available in ParentVUE two weeks after both parts of the test are completed. Science test scores are available in Parent VUE three days after the test is completed. The Testing Information tab in ParentVUE has links to additional information about your child’s scores. If you need assistance activating a ParentVUE account, please contact your child’s school.
Students whose parents/guardians do not have an active ParentVUE account will receive a paper report of test scores. Paper score reports will be sent home with students on the last day of school. Score reports will be mailed over the summer for students with test results that arrive after the paper score reports are printed in June. Students with at least one parent/guardian with ParentVUE access may request a printed report by contacting Kay Jenkins by email at kay_jenkins@beaverton.k12.or.us or by phone at 503.356.4594.
