Spring Break
We want to wish everyone a happy, safe and enjoyable Spring Break. Schools will be closed from Monday, April 15th through Monday, April 22nd. Our next Lisbon Lines will be published on Friday, May 3rd.
Report Cards
This past Friday marked the end of Quarter 3 and report cards will be coming home after Spring Break on Wednesday, April 24th. This is a great opportunity to celebrate successes from the past quarter in addition to setting goals to finish up the school year on a strong note.
Battle of the Books
On April 5th, at Wilde Lake High School, forty-two of our fifth-grade students participated in the Howard County Battle of the Books competition. Per the Howard County Library website, “Battle of the Books gets fifth grade students excited about reading. A lively academic competition, Battle of the Books improves reading comprehension, builds vocabulary, and teaches teamwork and good sportsmanship.”
These 42 amazing fifth graders worked in eight groups at home and during their recess time with Mrs. O’Connor and Mrs. Hastings, reading a series of thirteen books numerous times and becoming “experts” on many of them. At the battle, they competed against 54 other teams of students from surrounding elementary schools in our county, answering questions with 270 of their peers. In the end, Lisbon Elementary won second and third place awards for “Best Costume”. Congratulations to Mystical Multicolored Monarch Masters and Indomitable Unstoppable DUCKS!

Take Your Child to Work Day: April 25, 2019
As you may or may not be aware, April 25th is designated as "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day." If you wish to take your child to your work, please see the attached form to submit for an excused absence. If you notify us in writing that you are taking your child to work, we can code the absence as a "field trip," and it would be excused for attendance purposes. Please find the form attached.
LES - Take Your Child to Work Day 2019
Bus Evacuation Drills for Bus Riders
In case of an emergency, it is very important that all students practice how to evacuate the school bus. School bus evacuation drills have already been conducted successfully many times and will be practiced at LES upon arrival to school on Wednesday, April 10th.
In order to implement this drill, bus drivers will share the following information:
1. To begin the drill, the driver will give the command, "Evacuate by the rear door."
2. Students should leave all loose belongings such as books, backpacks, etc. on the bus.
3. Two older students, designated by the bus driver, should leave the bus first and place themselves on each side of the rear door to assist others. The students should then evacuate from the front of the bus toward the rear door.
4. A word of caution: When leaving through the rear door, students should accept the hand of the assistants and step down from the bust to the pavement. Jumping could cause a fall and result in serious injury. Students may sit on the floor at the rear exit and scoot out the door if they prefer.
5. Upon leaving the bus, students will form a line or a compact group to wait for further instructions.
Feel free to share this information with your child(ren) in order to prepare them for this drill.
Thank you and feel free to contact Ms. Wright (lashonne_wright@hcpss.org) with any questions.

Parents or guardians are to register students at the school serving the address where the child’s parent or guardian resides. Information on neighborhood schools can be found through School Locator on the school system web site or by calling the Public Information Office at 410-313-6682.
The following documents are needed for registration:
- Child’s evidence of birth
- An authorized record of immunizations
- Proof of residency in the form of a signed lease or deed and a current utility bill
- Photo ID of parent/guardian
- Proof of custody (if applicable)
Please visit https://www.hcpss.org/enroll/kindergarten/ to view important information about registering your student. You can also find a complete list of documents required for registration. If you have any questions about Kindergarten Registration, please call Lisbon Elementary at 410-313-5506.

Parents must still visit the school to complete the registration.
Please call the front office at 410-313-5506 to make an appointment to register your child for Kindergarten and/or to complete the online registration.
If you have a child currently attending an HCPSS PreK program, there is no need to re-register your student for Kindergarten.

Science Fair
Your child is invited to participate in this year’s Science Fair on Monday, May 20th during the Lisbon Lions Lollapalooza from 6:30-8:00 p.m. The Lollapalooza is a popular event that showcases the remarkable things our extraordinary students have done this year at Lisbon Elementary School.
If your child is interested in doing a Science Investigation, Collection, or Invention at home, please visit the Lisbon Elementary School website (les.hcpss.org) to download documents with further information and instructions. Once your child has identified a project, also download, complete, and return the Intent to Participate form by Monday, May 13th. (If you do not have access to a computer, please request a hard copy of the specific forms you need from Mrs. Drews in the office.)
Students who elect to participate will have their name read on the morning announcements and their name printed and hung on a hallway wall display. Directions on where and when to bring in the projects will be shared in future Lisbon Lines.
We are excited to highlight the commitment shown and the hard work done by the LES students this year. Many thanks for all of your support at home and in the building this year.
* Students in any grade may conduct a Science Investigation to answer a question/problem. Students will use The Scientific Method to learn the systematic approach to solving a problem.
** Students in Kindergarten, First or Second grade may submit a collection. Students will collect and organize something of interest, answering questions related to observations made while exploring their world.
*** Students in any grade may submit an invention. Students will use the engineering design process to create an invention that will solve a problem or answer a question.

Bushy Park Regional Early Childhood Center
Learning Together Program – Prekindergarten
The Bushy Park Regional Early Childhood Center (RECC) preschool and pre-kindergarten programs are making preparations for classes for the 2019-2020 school year. These classes include children with and without disabilities. The program’s focus is helping all children develop communication, literacy, math, problem solving, motor, and social skills. Parents of children who will be 3 or 4 by September 1st may contact Katie Hereth at Bushy Park Elementary for an application package beginning February 15, 2019. At this time, there are a few available 4-year-old learning together peer spots for the 2019-2020 school year.
The Howard County Public School System continues to offer a Pre-Kindergarten program for income eligible children who will be four years old by September 1. This program is also at Bushy Park RECC in the afternoon 5 days a week. Please contact Katie Hereth at 410-313-5500 for additional information and an application.
All Learning Together Peer applications must be returned by the last Friday in March 2019. A limited number of openings are available for children without disabilities.
