CARLSBAD UNIFIED CONNECTIONS

Carlsbad Unified Recognized for Excellence in Music Education
Carlsbad Unified has again been recognized by the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation on their list of Best Communities for Music Education. Designations are made to districts that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education.
Now in its 24th year, the 2023 Best Communities for Music Education program recognized 830 school districts across 43 states for the outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students, and community leaders and their support for music education as part of a well-rounded education for all children.
“Music education, as part of a well-rounded education, has never been more important to unleash students’ creativity and supports emotional health and well-being as they build connections through music activities,” shares Mary Luehrsen, Executive Director of The NAMM Foundation. “We applaud the administrators, teachers, and communities who support and sustain music education through a period of intense change and are committed to music education so that all children can explore and express themselves through music.”

Aviara Oaks Elementary School Celebrates New Salad Bar
On Thursday, May 4, 2023, Aviara Oaks Elementary School celebrated a new salad bar with a ribbon cutting event. Bob Enhn, grandfather of a second grader in Mrs. Flannigan’s class, donated the salad bar to the school. Jenny Maloney, daughter of Mr. Enhn, helped coordinate the donation, along with CUSD’s Nutrition Services Department, through the Chef Ann’s Foundation Salad Bars to Schools Program.
The ribbon cutting featured nutrition education and an array of fresh fruits and vegetables. Students tasted locally grown fresh strawberries donated by the Good Produce Farms in Oceanside and fresh sweet multicolored peppers donated by the Prime Time’s brand owner.
Mrs. Flannigan’s class learned about how produce is grown and about the nutritional benefits to students’ daily health and learning. Speakers included agriculture expert Mrs. Maloney, Principal Hines, CUSD Nutrition Services Director Mark Chavez, and AOE Cafeteria Lead Mrs. Sanchez.
The Aviara Oaks Elementary students will enjoy their new salad bar with improved visibility to their daily farm-fresh food options, as the height of the salad bar has been lowered so students can better see and reach their favorite fresh-cut produce items at lunch.
Volunteer opportunity for teens
If you know teenagers looking for ways to get their community service hours in, please encourage them to volunteer for our annual Summer Reading Adventure program. We are seeking 175 teen volunteers to engage young readers about the books they’re reading and help out at special library events.
Here’s how they can apply.
The Summer Reading Adventure is an all-ages reading program that allows readers to track their reading and complete library-oriented activities to earn free rewards (including books).
Teen volunteers are needed between Tuesday, June 20 and Saturday, Aug. 5. The deadline to apply is May 31, or as soon as all the volunteer spots are filled.
