National Society of High School Scholars Foundation, Inc. STEM Scholarships: $1,000
Deadline: 4/01/18
The NSHSS Foundation provides STEM to high school seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a demonstrated desire to major in any area of science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) are eligible. Requirements include a personal statement, a list of STEM activities, photo, transcript, and educator recommendation. ESA Foundation Scholarship Program for Minority Students: 30 awards available for $3,000
Deadline: 5/04/18
The ESA Foundation scholarships are offered for full-time undergraduate study at accredited four-year colleges and universities in the USA. Up to 30 scholarships of $3,000 each will be awarded annually, 15 to graduating high school seniors and 15 to current college students. Women and minority students are eligible to apply, so long as they are U.S. citizens and have a minimum 2.75 GPA. The Mae & Mary Scholarship Fund's mission is to financially assist and to empower young people to experience their unlimited potential through education. The Herbert Lehman Education Fund Scholarship: $2,000

The mission of the Herbert Lehman Fund is to help transform the promise of racial equality into a social, economic, and political reality for all people by supporting talented undergraduate students who need financial help to stay in school and successfully complete their bachelor's degree. Applicants must be graduating high school seniors; first-year students in an accredited four-year college; or students transferring to an accredited four-year college. STEM Up with Da Vinci Design Week @ The DISCOVERY PLACE SCIENCE!
Reinvent the Spring Break experience with a weeklong celebration of inventions, design and ingenuity during Da Vinci Design Week at Discovery Place Science! Channel your inner Leonardo da Vinci with 10 days of special DIY projects, design challenges and engineering demonstrations every day during Spring Break.
From learning new skills like paper quilling to creating movable robots out of wood, guests of all ages can unleash their own creative genius. See the full schedule of activities and events below.
Da Vinci Design Week: Thursday, March 29 – Sunday, April 8
(Discovery Place Science will be closed Sunday, April 1.)
10:00 a.m. – Make & Invent: Starting Friday, March 30, stop by Thinker Space to try out a new “make” experience! You can follow the design prompts or follow your own creative direction to create something completely unique. Check out some of the creations you can make this week:
- Felt Jewelry & Wearables: Learn to make badges, belts, earrings and more using felt and the basic hand sewing techniques. (Friday, March 30 & Friday, April 6)
- DIY Lightsabers: Harness the Force as you create your own lightsaber! Using PVC pipe, pool noodles, duct tape and a bit of ingenuity, guests can make their own Star Wars adventure. (Saturday, March 31 & Saturday, April 7)
- Paper Quilling: Explore the ancient art of rolling thin strips of paper into intricate designs and shapes. Guests can take their designs home or leave them on display in our inspiration gallery. (Monday, April 2)
- Mold Making: Discover the science behind molding and casting. Find out how these techniques are used to duplicate real-world objects and help scientists safely study specimens like fossils. (Tuesday, April 3)
- Sewable Circuits: Using special conductive thread, learn how to sew patterns into fabric that will create a complete circuit. Using LED sequins, brighten up your design with these cool conductive creations! (Wednesday, April 4)
- Remarkable Robots: Create your own moveable robot out of wood. Learn how to safely use tools like a bandsaw and power drill to find out how you can turn ordinary dowel rods into movable limbs and joints. (Thursday, April 5)
11:30 a.m. & 2:30 p.m. – Da Vinci Demos: Guests will get to try their hand at some of Da Vinci’s greatest inventions and designs! Learn how to calculate the Golden Ratio using Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man, catapult flying objects through the air or build a bridge strong enough to hold a car without using nails or tools. Be on the lookout for these demonstrations and more, located throughout the Museum.
12:00 p. m. – Anatomical Discoveries: One of the main components of Leonardo da Vinci’s art and inventions was his study of the human body. Starting Saturday, March 31, stop by the Explore More Me lab at noon to explore how the muscles of the body work together. From chicken leg dissections to educator-led demonstrations of the muscular system, you’ll be flexing your brain muscle with these anatomical discoveries!
2:00 p.m. – Artistic Design: From the Mona Lisa to the most recent discovery of the Salvator Mundi – the most expensive painting to ever be purchased – Leonardo da Vinci is world-renowned for his famous artwork. Create your own amazing artwork and designs every day at 2:00 p.m. in Explore More Collections. From fingerprint art to trying a technique called chromatography, guests will create beautiful works of art of their own to take home.
Daily Showings of Dream Big in IMAX: From the world’s tallest buildings to underwater robots and solar racecars, Dream Big celebrates the human ingenuity behind engineering marvels big and small and shows how engineers push the limits of innovation in unexpected and amazing ways. Inspire your young engineer with a trip around the world full of inspiring stories and extraordinary visuals on the largest screen in the Carolinas.
Da Vinci’s Machines: Need some additional inspiration for your designs? See some of the remarkable inventions and technological wonders of Leonardo da Vinci in the limited-engagement exhibition Da Vinci's Machines. Explore Leonardo da Vinci’s studies in mechanics, flight, robotics, nature and anatomy in over 75 exhibits and iconic designs. While exploring the exhibition, guests will also have the opportunity to meet some famous characters from da Vinci's life through dramatic interpretation. Performances occur daily. Congratulations & Welcome Future Cardinals,
We would like to invite your family into the stellar Cardinal Nest that will cultivate your academic experience during the years of 2018-2022. Come out and learn about your NAF award-winning STEM Academies and meet the staff that will take you from good to great! Students and parents will gather in the gym for brief remarks from Principal, Terra Kennedy and student support staff members. Students will have a chance to learn more about high school graduation requirements, academy pathways, schedules, school-sponsored clubs, sports, JROTC, AVID, Band, and Communities In Schools (CIS) programs. Our Cardinal Ambassadors will also provide a school tour for interested families.
