How do I Excuse my Student for an Appointment?
If you are needing to pick up your student at a certain time, Parents/Guardians are more than welcome to call us earlier in the day and we will be happy to deliver a blue pass to your student.
A Blue Pass is a student’s pass out of class. For example, if you have an orthodontist appointment in the afternoon, call the attendance line at 970-833-7105 and leave a message with your child’s name, your name and time you would like your student to be released. The school office will then deliver a "blue pass" to your student. When the designated time arrives, your child may show the teacher the blue pass and can leave class to meet you. They will already be checked out in our system and do not need to check out in the office. Parents/Guardians also do not need to come to the office when a Blue Pass is issued.
Though high school sports may look a lot different this year, SHS will still be offering 17 sports for our Silver Knights to participate in. Visit our athletic website at severanceathletics.com. You can also sign up for alerts for your favorite Silver Knight athletic team HERE. Stay up to date on any late changes for games or practices via alerts; you decide if you get an email or a text! As some of you know, the Windsor-Severance area was settled by Germans from Russia. These “Wolgadeutsche” (Volga Germans), as they are known, brought many of their traditions with them when they departed Russia for the United States. They also brought their cuisine and the means to make their native dishes. One of those ingredients was “Schwarzbeeren” (literally black berries). Legend has it that Schwartzbeeren seeds were smuggled through Ellis Island in the bellies of Volga German immigrants, but that has never been proven. The Edible Black Nightshade or Solanum Nigrum were used in traditional Volga German dishes like Kuchen (cake), Maultauschen (a kind of giant ravioli), and Knebel (dumplings). The Volga Germans that immigrated to the U.S. also used Schwartzbeeren for pie, coffeecake, and jam. Ask any of the Volga German families here in Severance or Windsor about Schwartzbeerenkuchen (Black Berry Cake) and they will tell you it is like eating a piece of home. If you are feeling adventurous and want to try something new, you can find traditional Volga German recipes in the “Sei unser Gast” (Be our guest) cookbook https://www.northstarchapter.org/shop.html. Try mixing a little sugar, flour, egg, and cream to put on your Schwartzbeerenkuchen. Mahlzeit!
