Weekly SEL Newsletter Wk 1 23-24
Wk 1 7/31-8/4 - Every School Day Matters - Attendance Lesson
Welcome Back Teachers and Staff
I am super excited to be able to continue our SEL Lessons this 23-24 school year. We will be using PowerPoint presentations to conduct our Attendance SEL Lessons and will continue with RethinkED lessons. This is the only week that I will be sending you the SEL newsletter thru your email.
I will be sending the newsletter to your Principal Mr. Olvera-High School and Mrs. Lopez PK-8th and they will include it in their weekly campus newsletter. You will be receiving the SEL newsletter a week in advanced so you can have time to prepare your lesson. If you are having difficulty using RethinkED or have any questions, please feel free to contact me by email at Moralesm@tisd.us
Rhithm App SEL Check-in
Rhithm App will begin the 2nd week of school
Everyday Rhithm App supports students’ ability to recognize how they are feeling while equipping them with skills and strategies to be stronger learners in and outside of the classroom.
Counselors use this tool that will allow them to more effectively support the well-being of our students. Please take time for students to use the Rhithm app on a daily basis.

Students SEL TOPIC - Working Together to Show That Every School Day Matters
Why is School Important?
We want to start by addressing a major myth surrounding attendance, and that is that missing a few days each year is “normal” and doesn’t matter that much. The fact is that missing more than five days of school each year, regardless of the cause, impacts student academic performance and starts shaping attitudes about school. Whether absences are excused or unexcused, they have a similar impact on academic performance. As a Tornillo ISD team our goal is to address the importance of attendance the first day of school.

Strategies for RESTORATIVE and COMMUNITY Circles
Using restorative practices in the classroom encourages prosocial behavior and decreases the likelihood that the incident will happen again, supporting the creation of a safe and caring classroom community.
Attached you will find strategies to integrate Restorative Practices during your SEL lesson and classroom lessons.
Create a Safe and Caring Classroom
Setting students up for success is key to implementing restorative practices effectively. Creating a safe and caring classroom provides a space where all students feel valued and are willing to view mistakes as a process of learning, both academically and socially.
• Develop community agreements as a class and post them clearly.
• Plan community building activities throughout the school year.
• Integrate Community Circles as a regular part of your classroom culture.
• Discuss the purpose and principles of restorative practices with students.
• Include students in decision-making when appropriate.
• Consider students’ age and cognitive development when setting behavioral expectations.
• Provide opportunities for students to share their experiences, values, and cultures.
• Connect academically and personally with each student daily. • Use and encourage inclusive and strength-based language.
• Develop positive relationships with students and their families. • Investigate your own cultural frame of reference.
• Explicitly teach the SEL skills necessary for effective restorative practice
